Review: 21 Jump Street

21 Jump Street
21 Jump Street: a US cop show from the late 80s that a lot of us probably never heard of. It was about youthful-looking cops going undercover in high schools, lasted five seasons, kick-started the career of Johnny Depp, boasted guest stars like Brad Pitt and Josh Brolin, and had a kick-ass intro that's all very Saved By The Bell. So then, perfect fodder for a 21st Century piss-take.

Perfectly enjoyable, funny and worth watching. 3 days later and I'm struggling to remember much about it though.

One time me and Richard Grieco -- "Greeks", as I know him -- spent a whole night in Tijuana taking tequila shooters and betting our salaries on cock fights. Ah, to be young again.

I care too, Dirk, I care a lot.

Owning the first series of 21 Jump Street on DVD and also singing the theme sting on an almost daily basis, I was most perturbed to see the trailer, and have avoided it ever since.

It's the wrong tone, it's the wrong plot, it's got utterly fuck all to do with the series. I am fully behind your Hart to Hart analogy.

Fuck Jonah Hill and fuck Channing Tatum. I don't care if he is surprisingly amusing.

21... JUMP STREET!

Desecration is a bit of a harsh word, but I agree that it could have been original content, it gains nothing by "rebooting" the series, as, apart from me, who gives a toss.

I still see it as the equivalent of "rebooting" Texas Chainsaw Massacre as "Mr Ben" 'cos the main character wears a snazzy hat and goes on magical adventures.

Admit it, you had to look up Richard Grieco to see who he was ;)

Correction: I wanted to be Peter DeLuise. Richard Grieco was a gaylord.

I don't think anyone apart from you actually cares about the desecration of the 21 Jump Street franchise - as long as it's a funny film, I don't think anyone gives a shit. But you are right, it gains nothing from being a Jump Street movie at all - it could have been a completely original property.

Are. You. Kidding. Me.

How is this comi-action-fail getting rave reviews all over the place? If this is what passes for comedy these days, I'm glad I haven't been to the cinema in years.

What has this film got to do with 21 Jump Street, apart from being called 21 Jump Street. It would be like remaking Hart to Hart, set in a hospital with Jim Carey and Helen Hunt, where the porter/butler keeps popping up and saying "it was moider" as a nod & wink to the original series.

Yes, I did watch the original series.
Yes, I did enjoy the original series.
Did it need to be remade as a shoddy film with fart and knob gags and the obligatory black foul mouthed police chief? Beverly Hills Cop called, they want their gag back.

Meh.

Oh, and Ali loved the series as well, even if he doesn't remember. He wanted to be Richard Greco.
