Review: 3:10 To Yuma

3:10 To Yuma
The Western is in fine fettle at the moment, with flicks like The Proposition, Three Burials and yes, even Brokeback Mountain bucking the trend. The latest grizzled gunslinger to mosey into town is James Mangold's remake of 3:10 To Yuma, a more straightforward Western with nary a gay cowboy eating pudding in sight. In fact, it's...

watching it now, on TV. It's very good, but the adverts are killing me. Westerns can't have breaks in them.

By the way, firefly's Wash is in this - that should have made the poster.

I thought it was good, even though it reinforced a lot of Western genre cliches (Apache sharpshooter, crazy second-in-command), and I didn't quite get the connection between Bale and Crowe's characters, and why Crowe did what he did at the end.

There's an excellent bit at the beginning involving a horse being ridden by a baddie, some dynamite, and a shotgun, which made me laugh for ages. Ruined by the very last 5 seconds containing the most STUPID thing outside of those campy old B/W Lone Ranger serials...

So a mixed bag. Definitely doesn't introduce anything new to the genre (except Steve the Pirate from Dodgeball), but is watchable due to Bale and Crowe.

Think that's Tombstone. He plays Doc Holliday I believe. I had to review Gunfight At The OK Corral recently and enjoyed that. I'll get around to watching the Dollars trilogy one day. Clint will kick my ass if I don't.

What's the one with Val Kilmer - Wyatt Earp? He's great in that.

*Once Upon a Time in The West, not America.
This site needs an edit function. Mind you, the America film is quality too. James Woods and Robert De Niro being maniacs. Oh, and it's all an opium induced flashback/dream.

I tried watching Unforgiven but just turned it off sighing. Even Costner in Open Range couldn't make it happen, and you know how I gots the hots for Costner.
But Once Upon a Time in America is awesome, for nothing more than the opening scene at the train station. And a supernatural Charles Bronson

In all honesty, I've no real interest in Westerns per se. Never seen Unforgiven, Tombstone etc., tried watching the Leone trilogy and fell asleep. But like I said, this would be a good film no matter the genre - the fact that it's a Western doesn't really come into it.

Yeah, I was a bit disappointed there were no car chases too.

I don't know, I've never been able to get into Westerns no matter how well made. Well, Once Upon a Time in The West but then all other Westerns are kinda redundant after that one. I tried to watch The Proposition but ended up turning it off after an hour with the hump.
*shrugs* No idea why, Westerns just bore me silly.
