Review: Be Kind Rewind

Be Kind Rewind
Be Kind Rewind is an unsung lament to a sadly dying art. In the same way that Cinema Paradiso harked back to a golden age - the time when the community would gather around a flickering screen and unite by the common spectacle - Michel Gondry's latest effort manages to evoke that dying memory of the time when people would clap at...

A friend of mine told me a friend of theirs had seen this and told them they watched a film "about retarded people". Kinda makes sense if you think about it...

Have you seen all the rubiks cube madness too?
Gondry FTW.

Aha, can't believe someone went to the trouble of putting this on youtube (was about to get some software to rip it from the DVD menu myself...)

Gondry using his kid's heads as drums, in an actual drumkit:

I didn't know where else to put this, but I had to put it somewhere. Father and Son Gondry, beatboxing and robo-boogying.

Ooh poop, it's not you tube.

copy pastey!

Saw this last night, and yeah all of the fun is definitely in their making their own movies, the first 25 minutes before that just need a bit of a kick in the behind to get it going. I reckon they should have expended some of the sweding scenes, the brief bit of Boyz 'n' the Hood showed how awesome that could have been.

I saw this the other day too, and whilst it wasn't that great, the ending was still quite sweet and uplifting. I'm beginning to fall more and more out of love with Gondry, though - his pacing is terrible. Why did it take about 25 minutes to get to the "hook" with the videos? There was nothing here we didn't already know from trailers, or even just the movie poster. he should stick to music videos, or even shorts.

Mos Def sounds like Pee Wee Herman being raped whilst someone tries to put a gag in his mouth.

I just can't get past that bit

Saw this and thought it was great. Still suspect Gondry's style is better suited to perfect 3-minute pop videos rather than 90 minute movies, but it's always a delight.

"You're magnetised!" is the new "I drink your milkshake!" Which was itself the new "Yippee-Ki-Yay!"

You're right, the way he says 'You're magnetised' is so camp. I've had Mos Def saying that stuck in my head for days.

It's killing me. Seriously.

I hate to admit it, but the first Tencaious D album is actually funny. He's got an ok voice, and is very creative with it - that fat dude can wail, and Dave Grohl on drums is more than welcome. Never saw the film but it looked shit. The series they did before the album came out was pretty good too, and it was only 10 minutes episodes, so Black didn't get too annoying.

Jack Black has one style - Jack Black. The "crazy" eyes, shouting and extreme arm movements. Not my cup of tea but I like Gondry so this'll be a DVD rental.
And Nacho Libre sucked

As a rule I dislike Jack Black, but I'm learning to tolerate him. I had to review the soundtrack and it's got his little Ghostbusters theme on it:

When you're walking down the street
And you see a little ghost
What you gonna do about Ghostbuuusterrrrs?

Brilliant.

Giant racist? Forgive my grammatical hatecrime.
"When Mos Def realises that it's (Jack) Black who has caused this"

It's one of the campest moments outside of Burmese General

Hahaha, I noticed that too; "You're mAAAg-netiyzed!" It's like that bit in Curb where he meets Martin Short in the street, and tries to get him to teach him his voices.

Really want to see this, I'm a complete Gondry fanboy - although his movies struggle to keeping any sense of pace whatsoever, and this is getting mixed reviews.

I thought The Science of Sleep ended on an ambiguous note too - were you meant to empathise with Pedro's (I can't remember his real name and his Dad was Mexican so sue me) longing, or pity him for being a little childish prick? It didn't resolve, and stole the ending from Pan's Labyrinth. Fun times.

Mos Def realises it's black? It? You giant racist.

I really want to see this, hopefully going on Friday. I love Michel Gondry's films, they're the kind of films you can watch on mute - visually stunning and always so original (except in this case, which is kind of the point I guess). His music videos are superb, well worth YouTubing.

Also, this is fantastic: Michel Gondry's own 'sweded' version of the movie's trailer. "Whatever 'eppened to our 'ood?" Click here

I'd like to watch this, except in the trailer Mos Def (come on, that's not really your name now is it) realises it's Black and exclaims so in the most campy manner possible.
No really, go watch the trailer again
