Review: Death Proof

Death Proof
Quentin Tarantino is not the unstoppable force we once thought he was. There was a time when he could do no wrong - his new movies were eagerly anticipated like no others, his name attached to a project was a guaranteed seal of quality and every fevered word that flew out his mouth and past his gigantic chin was like a dagger in...

I watched this last night and found it interminably dull. QT writes the worst dialogue for women. It's painful to listen to and boring at best.
Yes, he frames a good shot, and yes, he's got an excellent style (its cool to see the PT Hospital and whatnot) but it drags soooooo muuuuch when it's just four women talking. We nearly turned it off.

I give it two stars; one for Kurt's wink to the audience, and one for Zoe Bell being a glorious crazy woman.
Planet Terror might be ridiculous schlock, but it's funnier and

I enjoyed it (especially when it goes really insane and he starts killing people with the car) but the end sucks, he shoulda killed them all!

That's the sign of a good movie to me: if I immediately want to re-watch it. Of course, I never do, but just wanting to go back and enjoy it all over again is a good indication it's going to be a favourite.

I'd agree that Planet Terror is probably more re-watchable, but I rarely watch films more than once.

Between this and Planet Terror, I'll choose Planet Terror every time. Tarantino is like the film nerd of the two, and Death Proof is probably more in tune with what films of the time were - patchy, cheesy and exploitative. Rodriguez has far more fun with the concept and it's a much easier watch because of it.

And Rose McGowan go-go dancing beats backwards-faced Vanessa Ferlito's lapdance any day. Yowzer!

Tarantino was never the unstoppable force evverybody thought he was and the last time he did the anthology movie was Four Rooms which, much like Grindhouse, bombed.
Death Proof stands on its own far better than Planet terror (fun though that was) as Death Proof actually seems to have an underlying message. It delights in revealing the impotence and backward looking nature of the 'male gaze' that drives most genre movies. Hence it is quite important that the first half, where Stuntman Mike is in complete control has more of the 'Grindhouse' ticks, these mostly disappearing as the status is reversed.

It's cringeworthy watching Tarantino backtrack over the Weinsteins business model. You know he absolutely wants it to be a double bill with every fibre of his being but he has to smile and dispense the bullshit.

I heard about The Weinsteins splitting the movies for European release. Which totally, absolutely 100% destroys the entire concept of B-movie grindhouse, which was kinda the entire point of this film. If they put them back together for the DVD release, I'll watch it. As it stands, a half-baked Tarantino movie that apes shitty movies isn't about to earn my moolah.
