Art isn't dead - but that's only because of the lifeline it has been given by the phenomenon of graffiti and street art, pioneered by the renegade trail-blazer with a spray can: Banksy.
Come on, this film is a wind up, right? I saw it last night, it really made me laugh. Hats off to Banksy, it's smart and witty but surely not for real. As a documentary it's full of holes, but it's brilliantly entertaining. Surely Thierry is not real, it's an act, like a street art Borat.
Banksy.
Totally counter-culture, what a heroic figure in the struggle against...uh...stuff.
Surely by having an agent & a dealer that handles the sale of your art, you become part of whatever it is you are attempting to rail against?
I'm with Ali on this. Yeah it's somewhat clever and takes an intellect to do something like this well but it's still counter-culture instead culture, art for the minority, and while it remains veiled, a childish middle finger to the establishment adored by chav wankers the world over, which is kind of sad given the talent involved.
I'm unsure how I feel about this sort of thing (there, it happened: I finally referred to something I don't understand as 'this sort of thing'. I am finally my Dad).
I like Banksy's art, but he's not the messiah, he's just a naughty boy. Fun grafitti that looks cool and carries a (blunt) message. Satirical stunts. Nothing more than that.
It's the people who worship him I can't stand - the berks who pay million for a scrawl he daubed on a paving stone etc.
Think it's important to distinguish the two, because I didn't think clearly on it, I'd probably just direct my anger straight at him.
