Review: Fish Tank

Fish Tank
As the summer closes its doors on blockbuster season, at last we can look forward to the smaller and more intelligent films that the year has to offer. With the award circuits casting their eyes on the wealth of talent on and behind the screen, what better place to start than with Andrea Arnold's Fish Tank.

Oh, that film I mentioned in the earlier post down there, the Asian guy in it is the main dude in Four Lions, and also he was the boyfriend in that Charlie Brooker zombie thing, 'Dead Set'.

My mate took a girl to this. On their first date. Genius.

Good but not great. It might just be because it was literally too close to home but it just felt unrelentingly depressing up until the last couple of minutes, just an ongoing series of "hands over your eyes" near disastrous misses, the penultimate one with the little girl being pretty horrifying.
I think a lot of the critical praise is coming from people who will have never even seen a tower block, those who will hold this as "an accurate and gritty representation of Broken Britain" inbetween sipping their champagne.
Nevertheless, involving, well acted, worth seeing if you've got a tolerance for grimey drama.

I could go see this for free on Friday morning, but I might just go home and sleep instead.

I thought I made this comment but obviously must have imagined doing so.

It was written by someone from our wonderful hometown, Goaty, hence "Dudlowe". The trailer is all heart-of-gold druggies hugging when they greet each other. I hate it already.

EDIT: actually I'm being unduly harsh, it looks alright. Just about as realistic as Derek Acorah turning out to be right all along.

Really not interested in this.
If I want to see a desperate struggle against a working-class background blah blah, I'll just go stand outside and watch dozens of these people drowning in their own filth.
