Review: Funny People

I'll make no bones about it: I'm a huge Judd Apatow fan. I count The 40 Year-Old Virgin as one of the most underrated comedies of the past decade (there's just something about this scene that slays me every time) and consider Knocked Up to be a near faultless comedy - one that wears its heart on its big dumb soppy sleeve.

I went to this yesterday expecting yet another angle on the bromedy and/or sex comedy genre. I hadn't really read much about it, and wasn't that bothered.
Parts of it were excellent, Rogen was outstanding and looks just great as a XS version of himself. I enjoyed the relationship between him and his mates, and love/hated the relationship between him and Simmons. I just don't like Leslie Mann, so that brought the movie down for me.
Flashes of glorious, but it's overly long.

Shame all the "comedy" revolved near-exclusively around c*ck and cr@p jokes, but as has been pointed out the standard of the stand-up isn't really what the film will be judged on. Still, credit us with some kind of maturity as an audience - even Superbad wasn't entirely gential humour.
Also thought Bana should be ashamed of himself, but thats by the by. It was definitely stretching believability a bit for the "unfunny" Ira to be the source of George's success second time round. And as usual for the love interest - where was the evidence that Laura was in any way worth bothering with?
Too many niggles for it to be anywhere near Judd's other stuff IMO.

I pray they don't bother, though I've heard rumours and lies about Russell Crowe.
Leave Hicks alone I reckon, not enough people care enough to warrant a movie.
Or if they did, cast James Woods.

Of course - I stand corrected! The only other one I thought of was that early Lee Evans film "Funny Bones" which completely passed me by.
How long d'ya reckon before they make a Bill Hicks biopic? And who to cast? Goatboy's GOTTA have an opinion on this...

The King Of Comedy is amazing. Needs a rewatch. "Better to be King for a night than schmuck for a lifetime."

"Punchline" with Tom Hanks & Sally Field, but that was inbetween Hanks being entertaining and becoming an Oscar Magnet and forgetting he used to make fun films.
I'll watch this at some point, doesn't do it for me.

It's a real shame that this film keeps getting so-so reviews - I had such high hopes for it. Always found the arena of the stand-up circuit to be interesting and other than "The Comedian" and...er..."Lenny"...I can't think of any other movies that have explored it.

That's ok, I'm always apologising for length in every way you can think of.

Apologies for the length, by the way. I can't seem to write a review under a thousand words lately.
