Review: Hannibal Rising

Hannibal Rising
Turning Anthony Hopkins' most memorable performance into a pretentious Jason Voorhees takes a certain, rather considerable ability. Hannibal Rising is the work of an undoubted artistic vandal: it's not an intriguing character study into the mundanity of evil. It's just an exercise in the inanity of evil. Perhaps what is mor...

My girlfriend owns this on DVD and somehow convinced me this was a great film without actually going into detail why. After watching it with an open mind I am genuinely without any clue why she thinks so, and thinking I should actually be quite concerned for her mental welfare, not to mention cinematic taste.

The best bit is when he carves a big bloody M into the guy's chest, then goes "M FOR MISCHA!" Like it might have slipped his mind why he was doing it. And he really really does look like George McFly. Look, Back to the Future is on ITV2 now (as it always is) - go compare.

I watched it last night. It was thoroughly appalling, absolute rubbish throughout.

They should have called it "Rhys Ifans Ate My Sister! (And So Did I!!)"

It didn't make any sense. Why would men be waiting for him when he went home? Why was his name on a list? Wasn't it convenient that most of the villains had relocated to France, where he was now studying. Goatboy mentioned it, but the worst part is putting the mask on, as if it's some future trait or fetish, when he only wore it in SotL out of force.

Utterly retarded.

\"Imagine, if you will, all the worst parts of the Star Wars prequels condensed into a two hour chunk, with dozens of pointless murders thrown in\" - FUCK GEORGE LUCAS!!!!!!!!

Seriously though, after Silence I haven\'t enjoyed Harris\' ventures into Leckter territory. And as for Anthony Hopkins...puh-lease, the whole point of Leckter was that he was a deviously intelligent man only caught through the abilities of Will Graham (and not the 32yr old Edward fucking Norton version either, I\'m looking at you - Slim younger CSI bloke). Yet Hopkins turned the character into a wild eyed \"Wooooooooo!!!!\" obviously insane chap you\'d look at and instantly think \"Nope, not a chance you scary-eyed psycho\".
Brian Cox beats Hopkins into a cocked hat as the imprisoned nutjob.

Oh, and I dont get the whole poster campaign either. The hockey mask was something put on Leckter by Orderlies transporting him, not a choice he made because it reminded him of his dead Mischa.
Wank.

And fuck George Lucas.

Saw this yesterday. Appalling, genuinely appaling. They\'ve taken a great character - intelligent, calculating, brilliant - and turned him into a fucking ninja, and one that looks like George McFly from Back to the Future. You can see how they\'ve tried to put Hopkins\' mannerisms into the character by making him talk posh with a slithery sort of accent, but it just doesn\'t work. They should have CG\'d Tony Hopkins a new face.

There\'s now been more bad Hannibal films than good ones. They can do whatever the fuck they like with the character now, I\'m past caring.
