Review: Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince

Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince
First, an admission: I've not read the Harry Potter books. Go ahead: take me out back and shoot me. I've seen the films and enjoyed them as passing distractions, but never felt obliged to comment, given that they're so clearly aimed at the hardcore fans - trying to review them would be like pretending to support a football team ...

I read your review and understand fully your confusion. The good bits were JKRowlings but there were enormous boring chunks that were added by the screenwriters. A whole lot of the vital story line was left out and replaced with lovey-dovey stuff. The peculiar scenes in the marshes and the burning of the Weasley home being an example. We were not told anything about how the Weasleys were supposed to cope with nowhere to live!! No mention of Bill and Fleur's engagement or of the fight with Death Eaters and Bill getting savaged by Fenrir Greyback, so it will be really difficult when they come to film The Deathly Hallows. Above all, a huge opportunity lost to have a really moving and beautiful ending with the Phoenix song and Dumbledore's funeral. I did find the screenplay excellent and the special effects were great. I thought Slughorn was excellent and the whole team are so used to being together that it carried it through, but I do hope they choose one of the earlier producers for the next film. This one has really been a disappointment.

watched Potter last night, was pretty enjoyable, the earlier films on a whole made me very sleepy, but this kept engaged throughout, even made me laugh a couple of times, well worth the 2 pound bus fare. i think its pretty unfair to complain about the lack of research done by the reviewer, hes obviously watched the other films which i feel is more than adequate to give a fair review of potter the movie franchise, otheriwse whats the point in making the films at all! we cannot all be expected to sit down and read 6 books about teenage angst tut tut all you naysayers...i thought the review was pretty dam spot on....the film wasnt cut at all well, i loved how quickly the millenium bridge emptied, dumbledore must have been sitting atop the tate and magiced everyone to saftey, what a hero!!

How dare you correct somebody's spelling and grammar until you've read the Dictionary from cover to cover!

Sorry, what are mocies? Are they like movies? it's awesome picking people up on their spelling and grammer isn't it!

You really don't know anything about these mocies, how can you say all these actors know it's Potter? They've all done work outside Potter, and the one you are so willing to typecast it's actually the one who has shown more vertatility. Radcliffe has acted on Broadway and has even been considered for the Tonys so inform yourslf a little better before writting, please.

I had to google that. God I wish I hadn't.

The only spellcasting that should be allowed ever is if you're playing Knightmare.

I hate Harry Potter. A controversial stance I know, but it feels so much better getting it out in the open.

Poor Ali, getting it in the ear. Should've sent a qualified reviewer...

Meanwhile, I have a tonne of spells we can use on these meanies.

No one should have to read seven books before they sit down to a watch a film. Especially seven Harry Potter books.

Not loving this review. The writer clearly knows nothing about the overall story, which isnt cool if you're going to write a review for a film. Do some research first please.

Possibly. Not by me, I can't stand that sort of twaddle. Give me Magic Hollyoaks every time.

"balls to the church."

Amen to that. Have we got a review of Anti-Christ coming up any time soon, Ali?

"Didn't like the way you attacked the Church."

balls to the church. Also, aren't the Potter books supposed to be encouraging witchcraft in certain christian circles etc?
Ali
Posted by Ali at 15:23 on 05/07/09
Yes, it's a conspiracy. Me and director David Yates are colluding to bring down Harry Potter by making good films and giving them positive reviews. You got us!

"I've not read the Harry Potter books."
Oh, i'm surprise. How do you expect a good review if at least read the book?

"Dumbledore loves Harry (I hope I'm not the only one who detected a creepy 'priest and choir boy' vibe in their relationship)."
Didn't like the way you attacked the Church. I should think more on how to write and use less sarcasm.
I'm not fat and Rowling is very very great, but unfortunately, peoples like you and David Yates destroy Harry Potter.

Said it somewhere before, but if I was 11, I'd be going apeshit over these films. They do have a certain charm and I always appreciate a proper story arc through several books/films, rather than just new episodic adventures - or barrel-scraping, as it's otherwise known.

Have to admit though, I did find the guerilla spoilers outside the bookstore queue incredibly amusing.

plain-jane-super-brain. Old school Neighbours ref. I like it.

My name's Kirsty, and I love Harry Potter.
There. It's out there now.
I've got all of them in hardback with the proper covers, seen all the movies, and damn-near creaming myself over this one. Crude, but true. The "child" actors have been, on the whole, dreadful since the first movie, but they perfectly reflect the written characters. Ron's the best, Hermione's only in the books cos they need someone to solve all the dumbass magic problems in a plain-jane-super-brain style, and only in the films now for eyecandy. Harry's an annoying little fingdark whose only purpose is to get in peril. Neville ftw.

And it's because I love them that I can say that - it's like when you're the only person who can steal your little brother's lunch money at secondary school.

I've been getting into Dan Simmons of late, the Ilium/Olympos books would make awesome fantasy films instead of this tosh. But let's be honest, the books sold millions therefore the movies were inevitable.
Neither format is aimed at me and I have zero problem with kids and mentally retarded adults enjoying & loving both for what they are.
Just don't buy the books in an "adult" cover when you're still reading about fucking Quidditch & teenages with magic wands.
I'll wait for the "Harry Potter & The Adolescent Rage of Puberty" where he uses the "wankorium" spell to jizz himself dry over Hermione's now-legal baps.
I want a black-metal fan Potter using his magic for the power of slightly morose teen to remove hangovers and make fit girls' clothes fall off etc.

Perhaps I get a bit pissed when I see people I work with getting righteously angry about transformers and the supposed he man remake (they're fucking toy adverts for christs sake!) but yes, the Pullman books are glorious. The movie sucks ass though.

There's nothing quite like a Kevin J. Anderson book however. that makes me want to kill something. The guy is a hack, and when he's partnered with Herbert, they might as well be pissing on Franks grave.

I think the point I realised it was bullshit was in the second one, where Hermione dies at the end, but then Harry goes "O hang on, I got a vial of phoenix tears and they cure whatever unrelated thing it is that you're dying of LOL"

Never read the books, seen the films or felt even the slightest inkling to try. From what I can gather it's just one of those stories where stuff happens but it doesn't have any message or point to get across, and so it comes down to whether I like wizards and magic. I don't.

Somebody defensive about enjoying kiddy books?
:D

Try The Northern Lights trilogy for how fantasy fiction should be written to encompass adult & teen abilities.
Those books operate on two distinct levels and are an astonishingly good read and brain fodder.
The Golden Compass movie can fuck off though, that was awful

Bweh, I'll watch. The movies and books are brain bubblegum. Perfect for lazy and none challenging entertainment.

Three words for all the people sneering at the series and thinking they're above it as it's a kids series: -

Star Wars.
Transfuckingformers.

Still, she *is* an appalling writer.

Read all the books and seen all the films so far, so am looking forward to this. They're not brilliant, but they also ain't half bad.

This has got to be good to beat the third one, mind.

I've been halfway tempted before, but then I remember how terrible Rowling's writing is. "Harry picked up the magic hat and stood over there. Then a Power Elf walked through the enchanted door." Stuff like that.

Read half the 1st book and never bothered with the films.
But then they're not aimed at a 36yr old bloke who can read without running his finger underneath the text and mouthing along.

I've never really had time for Harry Potter and his witchcraft and black magic tomfoolery. I bought the first book on a cross-channel ferry in 2000 and read about ten pages of it, and watched the first film on a coach, in Germany, on a school trip, in German. That's my experience of Harry Potter.

Never read any of the books, but did give the first movie a shot. I decided this Harry Potter lark wasn't for me with the ending in which Harry Potter and his chums got a million house points for being all round good eggs and their 'house' they won the house point trophy.

Still if it keeps children and like-minded adults happy, what's the harm..?
