Review: I Am Legend

I Am Legend
There are two Will Smiths in this world. One is an actor of surprising depth and ability; he makes films like Six Degrees Of Separation, Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness. The other is The Fresh Prince of Bel Air; he makes films like Bad Boys, Independence Day, Men in Black and any other number of wise-cracking action hero eyewip...

So was that ever explained? The bridge thing? Seems like a fairly major oversight. Didn't they come in by boat or something? You'd think if you had a kickass Shelby and the roads were empty, you'd find any way out of the city pretty damn fast.

Apparently the deleted scene ending - the movie's original ending - was removed after a negative focus group response. I'd like to find whichever cotton-headed ninny muggins were responsible for that decision and beat them to death with shovels.

I think he did indeed, whilst woman & kid drove to freedom (across bridges that were destroyed in his flashback to prevent the disease spreading) - and arrive at the Amurcan Flag colony where they ate brownies and saluted each other heroically.

The alternate ending has replaced the real one in my mind, largely because the original ending was so bland. Didn't he jump through the window holding a grenade? Nice one. That'll be a crowd-pleaser, numb-nuts.

Pfft an American film without bad guys in it is as pointless as an middle-eastern country with oil. People would get confused without someone to hate.

Oh maybe: "Hey, if we leave that in, people might start thinking that the terrorists have families and values too! Crap! No! Let's remind everyone that evil must be stopped at all costs so let's blow the shit out of them - God bless our troops fighting them zombies".

Or something similar. Wouldn't be surprised if it had something to do with it.

Why in droopy misery didn't they use that alternate ending? I'm a sucker for a good ending, and that would have changed my whole view of the film. Still gotta read the damn book though.

Got to see the alternate ending and have to agree with Goaty in that it's better than the one they released.

Yup. It's baffling. They don't even look that different from humans anyway, they're just wearing shabby clothes. I don't get it: you contract a debilitating disease but it gives you superhuman strength and the ability to climb walls. Go figure.

Enjoyed this one. Shame about the computer animated creatures, people dressed up would have been better.

I used the word "family" too many times in my previous post.

Here's a youtube link to the alternate ending:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trTmH3jpxUg#

It's still not the book ending, but I think it fits the previous 90mins mood of isolation, sadness and redemption through the family unit. It explains the link between head vampire and the girl Neville traps, you even see the lion pride/family that Neville couldn't shoot at the beginning to reinforce the notion that you can survive anything as long as you have your loved ones around you.

I just can't understand why they went for the stupid cinema ending, it just pisses over the entire preceeding events. This one ends still on a note of hope without the American flag and pointless "SAVE YOURSELF!!!!" heroics from a man who previously couldn't give a shit about them apart from "you led them to me??".

I like the fact that his yearning for a family extends to the vampire dude, all Neville wants is his family back and realises he's fucked with somebody else's - monster or not, he's the reason for splitting up (evil) family.
Still think they should've gone with the book finale, but this one doesn't taste nearly as bad as the cinema version.

Oh my, read today on another film site (sorry Ali, I'm a whore) that the DVD will come with an alternative ending. An alternative last 45 minutes would be good too, but apparently this DVD will contain 6 seconds of footage that make a lot of difference yeah blah whatever YOU GUYZ DONT NO STEVE_O!

Saw this last night, as a movie in its own right, it wasn't bad, it just wasn't the 'I Am Legend' I wanted. I wanted a Robert Neville that had burned down the houses next door to stop the creatures jumping on his roof. I wanted a Robert Neville that didn't need a running machine to keep fit - the daily dragging of bodies from the garden and repairing broken panels would do that. And why did he have to be soldier AND scientist, hailed saviour of the day?

It kind of pissed me off that they started down the right road, the growing intelligence of the creatures, as if they're adapting, trying to catch him, so you think, when the woman turns up, with her mute retard child, and she doesn't know who Bob Marley is, there might be something up with that, she might not be a survivor after all, but then... my words on the ending 'bollocks'. Still, better than 'The Omega Man'.

Just saw this movie Will Smith is a GREAT actor! I fell asleep in this movie, I just don't think Sci-Fi is my thing but I can easliy see how someone could love it.

I saw that both times but it wasn't 'til the second time that it occurred to me that they might've researched what films were slated for the years I Am Legend is set in.

Not sure if anyone else has seen this, but there's a neat little Easter Egg in the film: a movie poster for Batman Vs Superman, dated 5.10.2010. I'm guessing it's not the only other little nod to stuff like this too.

I just saw this again but in the cinema this time and I enjoyed it slightly more than the first time. I managed to spot a few things I'd missed, too -- just a few details here and there that I overlooked previously.

And I think I cried more, too. Damn.

I can't wait until the alternate version is released, with Jazzy Jeff fighting zombies alone in Chicago. There's some definite crossover potential there.

It was genuinely exciting and interesting until the dock attack sequence and all after. The only saving grace was it didn't turn into a "I love you surrogate family" film, but it just never recaptured the feeling from that point on. And yep, thought Constantine was most enjoyable too. Another one I wasn't expecting much from yet pleasantly surprised.

I just couldn't get into it. Smith is so middle-of-the-road, and the "infecteds" so lame, there was just no meat to chew on, so to speak. It was alright for a bit, then took a bit of a nosedive and I lost interest.

*spoiler*

The bit with the chopper was butt-clenchingly tense and extremely well shot. Someone in our cinema actually shouted "NOOO!" when it happened.

The director of this is actually a really talented guy. If you've not seen Constantine, it's highly recommended - it's got the same sort of otherworldy feel to it, the SFX work much better in it than they do in I Am Legend.

I loved it, right up until it turns into another film altogether and I groaned inside realising they've thrown away all the hard work in favour of RUN! HIDE! SHOOT! EXPLODE!. Apparently there were reshoots after testing because the audience didn't like the downbeat ending that was similar to the book. So intead of that, we get the ending that's there. *shakes head* Because some bovine fucknuckle wants a happy ending, the rest of us have to suffer. Still better than The Golden Compass though

Not as bad as I thought it'd be.

I balled my eyes out at "that" bit. (Don't want to add a spoiler.)

I kinda dug it. Always thought the isolation aspect of the story was by far the most interesting angle - can take or leave another vampire film. The ending really did leave a lot to be desired, there's plenty of potential wasted. Not read the book but I think I like its ending more, makes more sense. Also think CG was the wrong way to go for the death-eaters (or whatever) - why should a crippled, diseased human be able to jump around like a monkey and scale buildings and scream like a fucking grizzly bear? Answer: Hollywood bullshit taking over.

Worth seeing for the first hour though.
