In defence of Shia LaBeouf

In defence of Shia LaBeouf
Nobody's favourite teen star Shia LaBeouf has been getting some stick lately, particularly from Harrison Ford, who called him a "fucking idiot" for ragging on Indiana Jones. Playing devil's advocate for a second, allow me to step up as LaBeouf's defence. Would the court please refrain from throwing rotten fruit until the summary.

Three things:

1. I really like Indy IV. The Tarzan bit was daft, but then Indiana Jones movies are generally quite daft, and no less loveable for it. I thought it was a worthy and likeably self-aware addition to the canon, and if it'd been made three years after Last Crusade everyone would've loved it.

2. I commend and envy Ali for having an actual point to make and making it effectively through a feature that consists almost entirely of words, and quite a lot of them. Personally I usually end up running out of things to say and getting Matt to Photoshop Kanye West's head onto someone else's to cover it up.

3. Matthew Goode was two years above me at school. My brother was fairly good friends with him and thus spent the first ten minutes of A Single Man crying with laughter and spluttering: "Goodey's kissing a man!"

"Even to a paper written for 8 year-olds, he was a punchline."
I cried.

His very name is a reason to hate him.
Who calls his child 'Shia', ffs.

'How we would call our baby? Maybe John?'
'No, no, no, no, no, no, no... Shia!'

Eloquently argued, but it's the fact that he *keeps* backtracking on his movies (while having a pop at much better movies which he turned down) that really sticks in my craw. My full rant is here: http://kinnemaniac.blogspot.com/2011/06/harrison-ford-vs-fucking-idiot-shia.html

I have to agree with the article - I genuinely like him as an actor and I've always thought he only seems to be a Hollywood punchline because the films he has starred in end up sucking in a big way.

To be honest, when he criticised Indy 4, he did it in a classy way. He recognised that everyone thinks its deeply flawed and then stood up to say that he was responsible. He wasn't - it's down to the writers and directors to make sure that things like monkey-swinging through trees doesn't happen, but LaBeouf took the blame anyway. Personally I think that's pretty cool and I'd rather have that than grumpy Ford refusing to acknowledge the fact that Indy 4 was a shitfest.

Is LaBeouf too honest? Certainly, but holy fuck if that isn't refreshing in an industry where everyone fake grins through their interviews saying that everyone was a joy to work with and their film is the best film to come out in years.

I like him - and looking back over the Transformers movies, his scenes are the ones that stick out most in my mind because he sells the comedy really well. In films involving giant explodey robots, that's no mean feat.

I generally like people who speak their mind but I'll be making an exception in this case. He has done nothing impressive or important enough for his opinion to matter or for him to justify criticising his own films.

I second Pink_Poop's comment. (Never thought I'd type that sentence.)

His acting bugs the absolute shit out of me. Doesn't feel natural too me, and it seems like he's constantly ad-libbing (poorly). More of that "trying too hard-ism" you talk about.

Also, total douche.

(I don't have the internet powers to show you the clip, but look up "Shia LeBeouf+paparazzi+coffee+ runs away like a ninny")

Nevermind, here you go:
