Review: Inglourious Basterds

Inglourious Basterds
Love him or hate him, Quentin Tarantino knows how to make movies that get people talking about cinema. Granted, the people doing the talking are usually the characters in his movies, but his passion for the medium is infective - if not always effective.

I should watch this again but have since discovered Black Books by Paul Verhoeven. Great film, very harsh but still manages comic book violence.

Somebody bought me this at xmas and I watched it. It's ok, what I expect from Tarantino.
He needs to ease up with the foot fetish though, getting more and more noticeable in each film.

Watched both Basterds and Death Proof yesterday and the day before (or the other way round) and must agree with Ali with both reviews:
IB is great to watch (although it has its flaws), 2,5 hours feels like seconds. Juicy characters, tasty action, tense dialogues. Chaotic at times, still great entertainment.

On the other hand, DP is a bore and what is more, after one hour of listening to those chicks rattling/grousing/grouching, one wants to kill them by himself to make them stop. Pity that second group survives. Also, showing bare feet isn't really so cool, I mean, there are other parts that deserve more screentime. Still, action scenes are superb.
All in all, I hope Quentin will make more films like IB than DP.
I guess none of it matters if he includes some BJ in them.

Hah, yes, that happened to me as well, Luke, as a result of both thinking about it, and reading more reviews, the one over at filmfreakcentral especially (Walter Chaw is a God); I definitely need to give it a second watch.

Saw this at the weekend, thought it was ok at the time, but the more I think about it the more it's starting to dawn what a great film it is. Quite hard to get into at first, what with the lengthy scenes, but I found that made the film quite unpredictable and better for it.

The worst part was Bradley Pitt - did he just pop onto the set whilst on holiday?

Best movie of the year so far. Not sure why it only got 4 stars here. It deserves 5 for the opening and bar scenes alone.

I went in expecting a "Fuck yeah America rules" movie and got something so much more. Waltz was amazing.

The best description of Tarantino I've heard is that he's a cinematic magpie, in that he nicks the best bits of other's peoples work and makes something of his own out of them. It's usually great, but you're never in any doubt that he's nicked it.

He's one of the only people left in Hollywood that you're never quite sure what he'll produce. Most people have a signature that they stick to, which is usually repeated with diminishing returns. One thing you can say about Tarantino is that after Pulp Fiction, the only other Pulp Fiction-y films that came out weren't from him. Jackie Brown was actually an incredibly brave move for a director on the brink of being super commercial.

I think I covered why I'm starting to dislike him in my rant a while back, but it's difficult when he makes entertaining films like Basterds.

"Love him or hate him, but Tarantino still makes cinema that matters"

This line stands out for me. Whereas lesser directors such as Shyamalan - who once made event movies - have waned in a few years, Tarantino still gets people talking. People say his films are self-indulgent but you can't deny once he sets his sights on a genre he does the best possible job bringing all the elements together.

I'm looking forward to seeing this.

Although saying that, most of the people around these parts are called "Caaahhnnt", so I guess it's not really that offensive.

Posters at the bus stop by our house have the full title.

Noticed this is being advertised as just 'Inglourious' on telly, and as simply 'The New Film From Quentin Tarantino' on the London Underground. (*slow hand clap*)

Read the script and it was Tarantino name-dropping European cinema of the 30's & 40's needlessly.
I love Reservoir Dogs & Pulp Fiction, but you know what you're getting with his films - ultraviolence, snappy pop-dialogue & musical cues.

I'd knock off a star for the mis-spelled words in the title.

Just cannot get excited by this film, and I usually like Tarentino.

I've always liked Tarantino (Though I think Pulp Fiction was way overrated - never got what the big deal was) because bottom line, his movies are fun to watch. This one looks and feels even more unique than his usual.

Regarding the review: Enjoyable read as always (Loved the alliteration too), but frankly, even the couple of venomous bites of QT are followed by "but it's not that bad in this case" type comments/passages, and so, I feel that the knocking off of the star remains unexplained.
