Review: Knocked Up

Knocked Up
Comedy is the most fickle of genres - so many comedians have been called the Next Big Thing™ only to be outed as one trick ponies a few films down the line. There's a constant shift in comedy that swirls round every few years and it looks like 2007 is a time for change; Ben Stiller is looking more like a monkey than ever; Will F...

Saw this tonight, agree, Paul Rudd is fucking awesome.

There was a lot in there I could really relate to - not knowing what the fuck to do and seeking books, for instance.

Sweet and funny, it's a nice combination. If I had to criticize, it'd be that both main female characters were quite bitchy, and selfish, and kind of pissed me off, but I got over that.

I think I still have some on there to be honest, at least that's my excuse for cleaning them so thoroughly.

How long did it take to get the iodine off?

Sounds like the "quick, sharp pain" and subsequent bruising I endured was worth it to avoid any such scenario.

Oh it's the worst feeling in the world when the unplanned pregnancy-bomb lands on your head. Total and absolute fear like nothing you've known, followed by that expression Wile. E Coyote makes when he realises he's in thin air before waving and plummeting to the ground.

Brrrrrrr

"Put a baby in me," she said. But she was pointing to her mouth.

"I'm sorry it normally stays up for ages"

That's what I said.

"I can't help but feel partially responsible," that's what I said.

Hmm yes. I sat in silence for about 10 minutes, life flashing before my eyes before i did the same thing all guys do and put the responsibility onto her.

My first word was "...shit". My next were "So...er...you want to...y'know....keep it?"

I watched this and 'Superbad' in the past week. I really enjoyed them both because I was expecting the usual shite. Personally, I find a lot of Hollywood comedy to be mediocre at best. Anchorman was an exception but I find the rest to be easily second best to something on television.

Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by the pair of them. They managed to work their way past my cynical and bitter heart. I imagine this is how every 20-something male in the Western world will react to the day they find out they'll be a parent.

So when the Taleban finally blow up the world, and it's only somehow you, Heigl, and I left deciding how best to populate Humanity, you can go fuck that tree you were talking about.

If you equate wrong-faced eye distancing with sexiness, I presume the thought of dumping your load on Admiral Ackbar would be quite appealing to you.

"It's a trap!"

"her eyes are waaay too far apart."

More room to aim, my friend.

Heigl's a hottie until you realise her eyes are waaay too far apart. And, in all likeliness, she's a complete bitch. Otherwise, I'd motorboat it.

Great film - very surprised because I thought Superbad was a load of shit, and Dewey Cox was like Naked Gun 3 without the jokes.

I think Apatow has the "male chick-flick" genre sewn up, what with this and 40 Year Old Virgin. Two films that look like they should be American Pie retardathons, but are actually genuinely funny, warm and, like Ali says, relatable.

Some of the lines are great too - moreso the ones that come from absolutely nowhere.

p.s. dibs on the term "retardathon"

"Was your pussy drunk? I mean...you think I'm a fucking inventor? Oh my god he's wearing a dick-skin condom? I mean...fuck!"
"You look like a dying Jabba The Hutt"

I need to see this again, if only for Paul Rudd. The guy's a goddamn American hero.

Quite possibly one of the more genuinely amusing films I've seen in a long time. And captures that "morning after drunk sex" hideous awkward "um....." feeling better than anything else I've seen.
Oh, and "I'll show you Meg Ryan's Bush" had me in hysterics for reasons I have no idea.

For some reason, I love the bit where they're sitting round the dinner table quoting Back To The Future. For almost no reason other than they like doing it.

"I'm gonna throw you in my DeLorean and gun it to 88"

The bouncer scene is great, as is

"You do look like your sister"
The chairs
"Matthew Fox"
The whole "Just do it" argument

Ben Stone: [while tripping on mushrooms] Isn't it weird how chairs exist even when you're not sitting on them?
Love the whole chair bit!

I loved the beard gags, really wanted to squeeze them into the review.

"See you later, late John Lennon"
"Your face looks like Robin Williams' knuckles"
"Whatever, Scorsese on coke"

So simple but so funny.

I think i need to go back and watch this again because i've forgotten most of it but what i do remember was great, whether it was the simple insults constantly being aimed towards beard-guy or probably the funniest sex scene in ages (it's like a list of things you should never say to a woman). What really stuck with me though was the conversation in the park about the kids chasing bubbles.
I have a slight preference for Superbad as film of the year but i liked Knocked Up a lot. Could have done without that childbirth scene though...
