Review: Let The Right One In

Let The Right One In
The world hasn't come down yet from the whole Twilight extravaganza: not only is the sequel in production, it seems that they are getting ready to prepare parts three and four of the franchise. But before Twilight fever sinks its fangs in us again, along comes a vampire movie cut from a different cloth entirely. Let the Right...

I'm reading Handling The Undead at the moment, it's most excellent - the same expert and sensitive handling over a subject we're supposed to be bored with.

I'm extremely late to the party, but I just watched the dvd last night and I must say, out of the numerous Swedish vampire movies I've watched in my life, this ranks right up there.

You guys heard of a movie called 'Gone With the Wind'? Thinking about watching that soon.

Didn't he arrange it, but didn't go through with it? I can't remember clearly, and I'm probably wrong.

I did like the Haken returning sub plot in the book mind. That was pure horror whereas the movie is more drama.

I've watched the movie four times now. I think it's definitly a classic. My only hope for the original is that some people will seek out this and the novel. I still need to get around to reading Handling the Undead.

He doesnt with Eli, but there are his memories of how he lost interest in a blowjob from an 11yr in a toilet halfway through and a couple of other unpleasant bits.

But I think we're all agreed on fuck the remake.

And George Lucas

"Really not sure about the old man being a peado though, glad they changed that for the film. "

I found that to be a really important and interesting part of the book TBH. (he never actually goes through with anything mind.) I mean, Eli is a 150 year old being. It looks like a 12 year old, but it's *not* a 12 year old. The move *hints* at it, but is stronger for that.

One thing I did like were the removal of the more traditional vampire things, I.e. The shapeshifting.

Fuck the American remake. Fuck it up its arse. There is absolutey nothing to improve upon.

I suspect you won't be too far wrong. Pop music, American high schools, 1 dimension jackass bullies, I'd imagine Dakota Fanning is dying her hair as we speak. I'm looking forward to what they're going to do with Hakan. I reckon he'll be a Dexteresque avenger, only killing bad guys to provide for his daughter, who is of course only 12 and suffering through teen vampire emo disease.
Go on Matt "Cloverfield" Reeves, prove me wrong. Make a teen film with a pederastic child killer. I dare you

Why do I see Shia Beef as Oskar & Lindsey Lohan as Eli, with Jack Black as her guardian in the remake?
And Oskar isn't bullied,he's just misunderstood because he's quiet and his foes ultimately respect that and leave him alone. And he & Eli hook up in a treehouse with Arcade Fire playing only for her to have to leave, waving goodbye from a bus in the rain as Jack Black RAWKS THE FUCK OUT DUDE!!!!!!!!!

Mock me, sure, but just you wait

I think if you'd read the book first, you couldn't be pissed at the movie version. Except for obvious deletions that just aren't acceptable in films (even arty foreign ones),it's 100% true to the novel.
Are you listening New Line with your castrated and just plain ugly adaption of "Northern Lights"???? I waited years for somebody to film that, only to look down and discover "The Golden Compass" floating about.

And the remake of this will be pointless. Anybody who can read without moving their lips and underscoring the words with an index finger already has the perfect version.
An American version with 90210 style teens, a tie-in soundtrack and jumpy "WHOOOOO!!!!" moments is just not needed.

Buy it and risk being on 'The List'.

I've got to read this book.

It was hinted at but not expanded on thankfully. They also decided against filming the ... erm... "creation" of Eli the female vampire. You could just imagine Daily Mail's reaction to a film with paedophiles, child nudity and That, in it.
Think I got away without spoiling anything there.

Finished the book and,as you'd expect with the screenplay adapted by the author - very very good and expands nicely on the film.
Really not sure about the old man being a peado though, glad they changed that for the film.

Nope, just nice and clean new coding. Site redesign is coming along nicely.

No,it's nice to see glaring mindfarts - it's a reminder of how easy it is to just say dumb things on the internet.
A lesson in thinking before posting.

I did assume you'd intend to read it, having bought it and all. Bit silly otherwise.

What I'm saying is, we need an edit function.

CGI cats not good.

Ha, I forgot the bit with the cats. Very cringeworthy.

And yes, the remake can go fuck itself.

One of my favourite films in recent years. There's so much depth behind what, on the surface, is a fairly simple story of two isolated kids looking after each other. The ending comes at exactly the right time, leaving you to make up your own mind on what happens in the future and also gives a possibly reflection of the past and what a eternally 12 year old girl would need to survive.
The scene with the cats was the only dodgy moment.

One of the best films ive seen in a really long time!!
Thought their relationship was so lovely, and of course the swimming pool bit stands out.
Cant believe they're gonna remake it though- why remake something that you wont be able to improve?!
Reading the book now- its just as good.

Yeah this is a really, really good film. Very sweet for a film about blood-sucking vampires and their frustrated near-paedo guardians.

Reading the book at the moment after seeing the movie recently. The author did the adaptation for the screenplay, and I think they compliment each other. The book explores everything a little further, which simply wouldn't be possible without making the movie 3hrs+. In style it's quite Stephen King - you can get it at the moment from Play for £2.99

Hm, never thought of it like that. Another layer.

Not an area I often touch on, but the sound in this was fantastic, damn eerie at times. The growl Eli makes is otherwordly, blody terrifying, especially during the 'invite' scene. Can't remember any music either, which means it worked.

Absolutely one of the best films of last/this year.
Thought the swimming pool scene is one of the "best moments ever" and it made me sit afterwards and think how Oskar is going to end up like the old guardian - explains why he didn't want her seeing Oskar again, jealousy.
Just faultless.

Agreed. Loved it, from the snowbound setting to the small moments between Oskar and Eli to the cool-as-fuck vampire 'rules', few and far between though they were. A totally believable relationship drama between two odd kids that also happens to be the best vampire movie I've seen since Near Dark.

I want to believe the US remake will be good... but honestly. This is the most perfect version of the story that it could be. Learn to read subtitles instead middle America, you uneducated fucks.

Anyone read the book? It's next on my list after Generation Kill.
