Review: Monsters

Monsters
Maybe it's because I'm partial to a good alien invasion story. Maybe it's because I like to champion the British underdog. Maybe - just maybe - it's because it reminds me of Jurassic Park. Whatever the reason, Monsters might just be my new favourite monster movie. Maybe it's the title. You know what you're getting from a movie called Monsters. Monsters.

Largely uninteresting and I really didn't pick up much chemistry between the leads, it was saved by two moments though.

The first ended up being a missed opportunity as they come to the great wall, then totally fail to react to the reality that even this massive structure couldn't contain said monsters and the world they were heading back to is the same one they're trying to escape.
The second is the final scene, which is the strangest and yet beautiful, final-reel romantic scene you'll ever see in your life.

All in all though, I think I spent most of the running time thinking up SpongeBob jokes about how Squidward wanted his own spinoff.

I loved this. I'm a big fan of worldbuilding and Edwards created a totally believable world on a shoestring. There were a couple of stupid decisions by the main characters and some heavy handed politics, but overall it felt like a travel documentary through a parallel universe.

The lack of monsters in the flick gives it something a lot of monster movies lack, a sense of mystery, and the closing scene was absolutely mesmerising IMHO.

The missus loved it too. Another SF movie. I'll have her watching them without complaint yet.

yes yes i enjoyed this very much, i found the begining a little slow but mostly enjoyed the experience, especially the jungle action..

i did have a strange thought whilst watching though, dont you think the real 'Monsters' are the Americans for building a huge wall to keep the Creatures (Mexicans) away and out of their country, whilst using extreme force to keep them at bay...

I liked it, but it should've been called "People."

There's a good mix of reviews out there, but personally I loved it. Pretty cliched (boy meets girl, boy and girl fall for each other, boy and girl run through alien infested jungle like a couple of idiots) but that's half the fun - it is a B-movie afterall.

Simply a well made film for what it is.

EDIT: edited for spaccy post-midnight fingers.

I'm still a little shocked at all the positive reviews this thing got. I did not like it much at all. The leads were bland and uninteresting, the story was dull, and the dialogue was heavy handed at best. The only thing it really had going for it were the special effects and monster designs, and there weren't enough of either to make the film interesting or engaging in any way.

Ah well...I know I'm kinda in the minority on this one, but I'm okay with that. Just surprised that so many people gave it such high marks.
