Overrated Movies #2: Donnie Darko

Overrated Movies #2: Donnie Darko
There have been many good films about time travel in the past - Back to The Future, Back to The Future 2, Mystery Science Theatre 3000 fave Time Chasers, Planet of The Apes and Freejack. Donnie Darko isn't one of them. Described as "cool", "classic" and "cult" by various beret-wearing critics wh...

Goatboy, you have just rendered every single opinion you've made on this website completely invalid. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

hmmm. nope it's still bollocks. I don't care how much Mark Kermode likes it or how many media-degree webloggers dissect it.

Southland Tales, however, was excellent.

Having actually read this review again I'm left scratching my head at how innaccurate it is.
It's supposed to scream "Time travel", the whole fucking point about the section between engine crashes is that it's the universe self-correcting by manipulation of the people who inhabit it. People behave strangely (Deus Ex Machina just another example) and everything is positioned in such a way that by the end, Donnie really has no choice but to accept his fate.
Film must be over 10 years old now. Loved it then, love it now.

Damn, the summary of this movie seems pretty inaccurate and based on it, I really don't think whoever wrote this actually watched the entire film (or they misinterpreted it majorly).
I won't debate whether or not it's overrated, but Donnie is not a "typical Hollywood teenager." He has serious mental issues from the get go ("emotional problems" as they're referred to in the movie), which he takes medication for. He used to be a pyromaniac and overall juvenile delinquent, so he's in therapy long before he encounters Frank.
This writer makes it seem as if the mental problems started AFTER Frank, but this isn't true at all.

I quite enjoyed Southland Tales, even though I didn't understand a second of it. It was like watching a really good looking film in another language on holiday. Everything looked like it was supposed to make sense, but it just didn't.

Think I had more fun reading what it was supposed to symbolise afterwards than I did while actually watching it. Kinda the same problem with Donnie Darko, comes with the baggage of required reading.

Quite looking forward to The Box though, can't really go wrong with a Twilight Zone story and Frank Langella with half his face missing.

I watched the Director's Cut last week, just in case I missed something the 1st time.
And nope, it was still nonsense.

Southland Tales, on the other hand, I enjoyed thoroughly. Despite ending up counting the amount of times I saw the bunny-face image throughout (18 if anybody's interested).

I thought it was all building up to a fantastic ending. I\'d been told by loads of people how good the film was and got caught up in the hype. The idiots who like it say you ned to watch it a few times to understand it. It only took me one watch to understand that it\'s shit. I\'m glad I borrowed it rather than bought it. That would have been a waste of money.
