Review: Public Enemies

Public Enemies
On paper, this movie has it all. A credit crunch-defying story about renegades sticking it to the money men. A mouth-watering A-list face-off between two of the coolest bastards on the planet. A director who couldn't direct a shitty shoot-out if Michael Bay had him at gun-point. Why, then, does it feel so lacking? Despite all th...

Was left totally nonplussed by this. Left me feeling a bit empty. Even Depp was a bit off, just didn't really feel he was into it. Has some great scenes - the bit in the cinema, the scene where he walks into the police station, the woodland lodge shoot-out - but the rest left me cold.

Stephen Graham was great, they should have used him more. Short man syndrome personified.

Funnily enough, after watching Public Enemies last night, one of the first things I said to the girlfriend was "I have a hankering to watch The Untouchables now". If you can get over Costner in yet another squeaky-clean role, it's a great film.

Yeah it wasn't great but it had potential. I think I could watch it again but only if it was on tv one evening and the sci fi channel had nothing better to offer.

The best gangster action film (besides Bugsy and The Godfather is drama) is the paradox of the Untouchables. Terrible on all counts, yet somehow the makes it highly watchable and therefore brilliant.

Finally got round to seeing this after reading a couple of 5-star reviews and I'm siding with Shiznit on this one. Sooooo disappointed. Without Johnny Awesome Depp and Michael Attention-to-detail Mann, there is little here to make it worthwhile. Everyone else is woefully underused and there's so little exposition that it's kinda hard to follow. Good thing there's plenty of cool shootouts.

This is a pretty good movie. Johnny Depp steals the show, which is actually unfortunate because no-one else in the film gets to have their moment, especially not Bale as Pervis, whose character is not fleshed out enough. Still, Depp works very well with Dillinger and the last 20 minutes of the movie are phenomenal. I knew what was going to happen but my heart was pounding like crazy. Most tense moment in cinema for this year so far.

Is that the poster they had to change because it said "Public Enemies" over Depp's balls?

Babyface... always reminds me of Bugsy Malone. If they'd got Dexter Fletcher to play Babyface Nelson, I'd be very excited.

Baby-Face is just as you feared. Loud-ass cotton-mouth Psycho with Evil Glare TM. And Bale is wasted, a dog of a role really.

Depp is great, though. And the woodland shoot-out is top notch.

I really want to watch this, Mann can do no wrong (even Miami Vice had it's moments).
The 2 setbacks to my enjoyment of Public Enemies:
1) I know how it ends, loved Dillinger as a kid and read all I could about him
2) Babyface Nelson. It just reminds me of "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?" to hear Babyface mentioned and I'll be waiting to see him start crying and shouting at old folk.

Bale can fuck off though, I've seen his repressed pyscho act in pretty much every movie he's ever done. And hearing his epic tantrum on the T4 set just sealed the deal for me on Bale.
