Review: Quantum Of Solace

Quantum Of Solace
Where does a character go once he's been reinvented? Stripped down to the bare essentials, the James Bond of Casino Royale - the 007 that Ian Fleming would have approved of - proved extremely popular with audiences and critics alike, enough for them wipe the slate clean and agree to start afresh. Bond now rebooted, battered phys...

No no no, I think Craig is doing an excellent job. I like the grumpy, thug Bond that he does rather than the oily & mid-management Bond of others - all smarm and smirks.

They need to keep the Bond movies away from laser-watches & invisible helicopters and all that crap, root them in a believable world and have Bond smashed up and moody rather than wearing a tuxedo and outrunning an entire pack of exploding robot squirrels.

Casino Royale was excellent, bought that & Quantum of Solace on blu-ray for £20. Solace is alright, just not as good as Casino Royale.
But they're both light years ahead of Pierce Brosnan and his gadgets & whoring around.
My favourite Craig-as-Bond bit is the entire first segment from Casino Royale chasing the free-runner bloke all over the place smashing through walls and breaking into the Embassy.

Didn't think too much of this, but I'd watch Casino Royale again.

Wish they'd camp Craig up a bit - needs more henchmen extras and evil lairs, not realism and "gritty", whatever the fuck that means.

Finally watching this (halfway through after the opera shootout) and it's pretty good except for one thing - STOP CUTTING SO FAST IN ACTION BITS.
I can't see or understand what's going on most of the time, he's running then falling then running then rolling in about 1 second flat.
And now in a taxi, even the subtitles are clashing together and making me confused.

Give the next one to somebody who can direct action. And what looks like Julianne Moore just turned up as a British Agent/guide.
How very odd

***edit***
And why is Jools Holland speaking with a French accent and being a Bond villain? With Quentin Tarantino as his henchman???

First off,i miss the smooth talking ladies man that S Connery and R Moore used to present.Secondly the quantum of solace displayed less gadgets and accessories by the villain and the signature Bond ,James Bond.Martini.......where the liitle things that made 007 fun to watch.

Despite the accepted view that daniel craige lacks the charm of his predecessors, you will also accept the grim truth that the script lacks the punch that any previous Bonds of the past except for any by Timothy dalton.

In the process of trying to depart from the already known and accepted Bond,i am afriad that they might just end up destroying so many yrs of fun Bond movies and franchise.

Bond in my head should never be a savage ,not smooth and mute.

The quantum of solace is not only a dissapointment but a disaster.

What a yawnfest. Did Bond actually speak in this one? I can't remember a single thing about it. Oh yeah, that's right - a worse speedboat chase than the ones they did in Bond films from 20 years ago.

Why isn't Bond fun anymore?

Review was spot on. Disappointing, very little of interest, camera work and direction are plain awful. It feels like part 2 of a two-part story but has no cohesiveness and the end leaves nowhere to go.

great review, just saw Quantum at Leicester Square and felt like I was watching a PS2 game played at superfast forward. Too many fast cuts, impossible to follow the action. Far fetched fights. Ptoi.

A lot of people have been banging on about how its the first direct Bond sequel, but you wouldn't know to look at it. It's set, what, a maximum of a week after Casino Royale and Bond is so consumed with vengeance he... fucks another woman. And makes out with a second. And for a new special agent, he sure does kill a lot of leads - tut tut. And MI5 must have had a major cash boost, because their crummy computers from CR have been upgraded to Minority Report style holo-wafters (and everyone - including septugenarian Judi Dench - has learned how to use them already!).

Dumb for an average movie, inexcusable for a Bond movie.

But admittedly the holo-computers were absolutely wank and the French guy was Elliott Carver but shitter

It's really quite good, loads more development of his character, some great little bits like the sneaky balcony and the motorbike robbing, nice little tribute to Goldfinger and a decent Bond girl. Not as good as Casino Royale because it's easier to make a great movie about an origin story, but then again Dark Knight wasn't as good as Batman Begins so there you go. Some of the criticisms I've read of this about it not really getting going and just being Bond running from place to place could apply to Dark Knight too.
I give it 3.5 stars

I enjoyed all the non action parts (i.e. where a shot was held longer then half a second), especially seeing bond get by on his wits, rather than invisible spoons and exploding tea cakes. Didn't enjoy Casino Royale though, as it seemed like half way through someone inserted clips from Love Actually.

I totally agree with this review - the most accurate i have read so far. the tabloids have been far to lenient on this one.

2 years to see bond cry and all we get is kiss kiss bang buck.

i don't think Brosnans era was that bad though,,, but u merely cannot take it too seriously.

Casino Royale was the chance of a lifetime for Bond... and that stupid director totally ruined my favourite hero. I shall be assainating him as soon as I can find a trusty gun for hire...

I thought it was great. It solidifies Craig as a complex and interesting Bond and in fact i think it does some stuff better than Royale (its shorter for starters)

Wow, I wasn't expecting a review this early.

I also wasn't expecting this movie to get only two stars. I'm still going to see it and hope that I will like it.

There are good bits in it. The bit in the lift is great and there's a few nice touches here and there - Bond sneaking along a balcony, Bond feeling a guy's pulse and waiting for him to die etc. And the bit where he robs a guy of his motorbike is awesome.

But then he starts riding it at about 25mph and just goes put-put-put very slowly down the street after the bad guy. Frustrating.

Not to ape Goatboys post but yeah, bugger it. I was looking forward to this one. I hate Bond films but i thought Casino Royale was great and this one had a lot of potential to follow on from that. Why did they put someone so inexperienced with this type of film in charge?

Meh, another year, another Bond, whatevaaaah.

The banner picture on the review page looks like you took the Rick Astley mockup, then re-Photoshopped Daniel Craig's gigantic, Easter Island-esque head back into it:

Well...arse,
Was looking forward to this after Casino Royale - maybe your review is a lie, sent to confuse me from the future.

I did like the Partridge suggestion and could hear his voice shouting at the tv.
