Review: Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

Scott Pilgrim Vs The World
The next time someone tells you about how 3D is the future of cinema, sit them down in front of Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, preferably on the biggest screen you can find, and watch their jaw hit the floor. Here we have a film that's so sharp, so visually stimulating and so whip-smart, it positively crackles with energy. It may well be the best-looking movie of its generation. 3D is where it's at, huh? Spare me. The future of cinema lies in the hands of filmmakers like Edgar Wright.

At last had the chance to watch it.

What a bizarre, yet wonderful movie that is!
Truly something new within the field of the comic book flicks. With naked boobs/ass attached it would be a complete movie. Still, a very good shit. And has underwear shot.

Well, if you want to be all positive and shit, sure. I just want to say that I was able to identify with Scott on occasion. Why did he treat Knives so badly? Because sometimes that's what guys do. It wouldn't be the first time a guy dumped a nice girl so he could get with a different one who fills some sort of ideal he has in his head.

Or maybe you can identify with it better then Goatboy.

I'm 36 and I loved it. Maybe that means I'm emotionally immature, but whatever. This movie is really something special.

Nah, didn't work like that for me.
As I've said, kudos to Wright. Did a fantastic job as director, and I can absolutely give him plaudits for technical & passion achievements.
Superbly *made* film, as are Gus Van Sant's.
But, like Van Sant movies, Scott Pilgrim wasn't made for me.

I can't say "it was shit" like, say, Underworld 3 is. It's clearly not. But I can just say "I hated every single second of it because it wasn't for me".
Like Queen. Hate their music with a ferocity that borders on surging. But can't deny Freddie Mercury was a born performer and one of the best vocalists ever.

So, in summary, Underworld is an awful awful movie.
Just how do you fuck up Vampires vs Werewolves?

A distraction from the drudgery of shitty modern life?

It's a flawed film, I kind of disliked Scott for a lot of the movie, but you forgive it its flaws because it's so damn entertaining. Even if you brain is tutting, your eyes and ears are getting off.

It was frustrating more than anything else.
I feel bad for Wright I think. He did a sterling job, really was a fantastically made film with brilliant editing & composition. Technically and artistically, first rate.

But the subject/actors/humour were completely flat.
Didn't care about Pilgrim, his arrested emotional development or any of the characters. They were too "meta", too aware they were a fictional creation. And I didn't need a character going "huh?" "wuh?" during the musical number to tell me it was winking.
I "got" the videogame references, but what's the point?

To be fair, I don't think anyone thought this was going to be a game changer, did they? I thought the rabid fans that poured and buzzed over the trailers (among whom I count myself) were expecting a brilliantly sharp and funny flick with awesome action, effects and a metric shit tonne of gamer gags and pop culture references. I'd say Wright delivered on every count, but it was only ever going to be just a cult hit - an acquired taste for sure.

And that I think is the problem with the movie Goatboy. Granted I have not seen it, but those who said that this would be a game changer were for lack of a term, full of shit. This was not the case. Granted though, it may have a future as a cult film, but that's about it.

I was gobsmacked when I read he was meant to be 22. Thought he was 15/16.

It's just the character of Pilgrim that pissed me off.
Thought Wright did an excellent job, can't fault his energy or inventiveness at all.
But the characters/story left me cold and found myself tossing my heard around and audibly huffing whenever Cera shuffled into shot. Why did he treat Knives so badly? What did she do wrong other than like his band/him?

Like I said, were I younger or more into the comics then I'd probably enjoy it. I'm not the target audience and a film like this is so narrowly aimed that it's not Wright's fault I didn't make it more than halfway through

Wow Goatboy. This movie pissed you off big time. although in retrospect I'm not surprised.

I made it to the battle of the bands when Ramona comes in and everybody says "hey".

It may be because I'm a bit too old but the character of Pilgrim is hugely fucking annoying and I wanted to shake him by the shoulders and shout "STOP MUMBLING! STOP BEING SO MICHAEL CERA!" over and over.

Nicely directed from what I've seen, Wright certainly has visual tricks and cues falling from the sky (literally) and like the snow melting as Ramona skated away.
But I can't get past my loathing of Pilgrim as a character.
Whiny, wide-eyed innocent blahblahblah.
Angsty romance, even if set to 8-bit music, irks me. And I couldn't give less of a fuck about 18-24yr olds if I tried to.

Probably an excellent movie if you're 30 & under, hyperactive or a fan of the comics.
*shrugs*
Can't fault Wright's ability, just can't give 2hrs of my life to characters I want to set on fire.

Inception instead, a film about grown-ups with no quirky INDIE FUCKING SOUNDTRACK AND CARTOON VISUALS.
Scott Pilgrim even has puffy coats, he's worn one for the past 25mins ffs....

Saw it tonight, really quite brilliant in parts, fantastically imaginative and just loaded with so many little touches. The only problem is Ramona, who at no point did I feel was worth the trouble.

Oh and I would have liked Kim fleshed out a bit more.

I saw it on Thursday, the cinema was quite empty, mostly teenagers. And the film was totally lost on them. One group lasted about 45 minutes being losing interest, meaning they sat and talked through the entire remainder of the film, only during the action scenes did they shut up because they couldn't hear each other (or I couldn't hear them, either way was good).

I thought it was decent, but most of the best jokes were in the trailer (except for Culkin's lines, there were some really good ones) which of course I've seen a dozen times already.

Looking forward to blu ray so I can watch it without people talking, and it took a second viewing of Shaun and Fuzz before they made it onto my top film list so I'm sure I'll enjoy this more the second time around.

"You made me swallow my gum! That's going to be in my digestive tract for seven years!"

Jason Schwartzman was awesome, as was Chris Evans and Superman- shame they were all such small parts.

Saw this tonight (yep, I know I said Thursday below, I was mistaken, nearly missed it) and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Visually it's a treat, and it never feels gimmicky for a moment. I was a little worried that it might come across that it was trying too hard to be cool, but it's not like that at all, it's well-balanced and effective.

I wasn't overly sold on Ramona - I found her a little too aloof, but it wasn't a big deal, and you're right, Knives is much more endearing.

Difficult for a film like this, with only the geek faction excited about seeing it, to perform well at the box office when it opens with The Expendables, the manliest of manly films, and Eat, Pray Love, the girliest of girly films. Not many people will pay money to see the 'unknown quantity' option instead.

Anyway, the same thing happened with Kick Ass and at least that now seems to be cleaning up in DVD sales stateside at the moment. Hopefully the same will happen with Scott Pilgrim. In any case, this should be the film that wins in the longevity stakes and may even be considered a 'classic' at some point in the future. I can't imagine the same will be said of The Expendables.

Great review - says everything about the film that I have been trying to formulate in my head since seeing it.

It's easy to say "I didn't want it to end", but I was so caught up in letting Wright's amazing visuals, brilliant gags and engrossing story wash over me that I was genuinely sad when the credits rolled and I realised I had to return to the rest of my life.
