Review: Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows

Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows
Once again, Guy Ritchie delves into Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's lesser-known casebook of Sherlock Holmes – the one filed under 'improbably explosive' (subfolder: homoeroticism) – and pulls together a sequel that, by the law of the blockbuster, is destined to be a lazy rehash of the first film. However, not so in this case; Ritchie has upped the ante on every level, building on the same style and plot devices as Holmes' last outing but raising the stakes in the process and delivering an adventure that's just as fun as the first time round.

Just back from seeing this. I reckon Ritchie's style is exactly what's made these two films what they are TBH: think what'd be left without them. Holmes can think about clever stuff all he likes but it's not much use unless it's visualised somehow. Ritchie's a perfect fit I'd say.

Not as great as the first, but still very good on its own merits. Plus contains Stephen Fry's mighty naked frame, which is no bad thing.

How about Arsene Lupin and Moriarty in third film?

Kinda liked this. I still think Guy Ritchie's style is an ill fit for the source material (how many internalised shots of guns going off does one film need?) but I will concede the forest escape was pretty cool and the final showdown is well handled. Much prefer the detective work to the punch ups. Not sure what they'll muster for Sherlock 3. Holmes fights the world's smartest gun?
