Review: Sunshine Cleaning

Sunshine Cleaning
The easiest and most obvious comparison to make with Sunshine Cleaning is with Little Miss Sunshine - both films come from the same producers, both are feel-good indie comedies, both feature Alan Arkin as a world-weary granddad imparting his wisdom to a young 'un and, um... both have the word 'Sunshine' in the title. That'll do,...

An OK film but it felt more than a little disjointed, contrived and just plain pointless at times. For example, the 1-armed cleaning guy. Why? Is he supposed to symbolise loss or was he just thrown in as a spare babysitter? How about the old woman whose husband had killed himself? Saying something or a cynical but effective attempt to elicit some emotion from the audience? I'm really not sure what this movie was trying to say, such were the numerous scenarios, which makes me question it's motive instead of it's motif which was incoherent.
Having said all that, I thought the scene underneath the train tracks was a brilliant metaphor for someone grieving and wanting to connect with the person they've lost. Adams and Blunt in particular are outstanding and totally believable as sisters.

It's an alright film, but wears it's "indie" cred on it's sleeve in a painfully "hey, I'm a quirky and indie film, perhaps an outside contender for the Oscars?" way.
Harmless but pre-packaged to goatee indie fans like myself.

"Adams and Blunt, two of the most talented young American actresses working today"

Blunt is from London. Otherwise her "flawless US accent" would be slightly less impressive.

Never heard of this but I like the people in it and it's an indie film, which translates as must see if you're under 30. Another one to add to the rental list.
