Review: The Golden Compass

The Golden Compass
You can see why this was made by New Line. It's 100ft tall with CGI signs all over it: "Hey, a fantasy trilogy based on popular books! Payday-tastic! Green light now!" Hell, they even put Saruman and Gandalf into the film for an ironclad Tolkien seal of approval. I mean, if those guys are in it, it must be as good as 'the other ...

I watched this again this week to see if maybe I was too harsh on it initially being a huge nerd for the books.
Nope, it's just as baffling and empty the 2nd time round. Thankfully we'll never get "The Subtle Knife" or "Amber Spyglass", which is just as well.
An enormous box of wank.

Fully agree Andy. It *looks* perfect, but without the background and heart of the books it's just a breakneck paced story, and taking said background and heart out of it highlights just how strange a story it is too. I imagine audiences unfamiliar with it just scratching their heads and thinking "Wtf?"

I was interested in going to see this as i've heard the books are fairly good but i've held off waiting for a review.
It sounds like this years Narnia so i think i'll pass.

Aye, the bear fight is fantastic. But so is that salmon advert where a grizzly fights a fisherman with bear-fu.
It's not going to draw anybody into the books, because the film is rubbish. I had such a boner for this film, I went in really really wanting to like it and a little part of me cried to admit it's just not very good.
Gandalf The Bear just expositions away before trotting off to have gay bear sex and punch boats. Without the bear, there is nothing to recommend this at all. Bugger.

Zero interest in seeing this really, although I suspect if I'd had read the books first then I might be slightly more intrigued. Just looks like your identikit 'small kid on big adventure' story with CG bears and James Bond.

I hear the bear fight is awesome though. I'll wait for the YouTube link.
