Review: The Wrestler

The Wrestler
It's easy to laugh at Mickey Rourke. He's a has-been; a dog fancier; an actor reduced to the stakes of a bum. After a well-publicised career meltdown, an ill-advised return to boxing left him with, in the words of Charlie Brooker, "a face like wet cat food." He is, in short, a joke. Yes, it's easy to laugh at Mickey Rourke. But ...

As much as I hate wrestling (esp. American version), I enjoyed that film. Rourke was damn convincing. One thing I didn't like was overuse of that damn behind-the-back camera. Pretty irritating after 999th use. The walk ending with "Ram! Ram!" perfectly done, though.

Bloody good film and damn tragic for how true to life it is.

I still think Angel Heart is a fantastic film, but most of his other stuff pre-mentalist doesn't work for me. He was "Soft Porn King" with the absolute nadir being "Wild Orchid".
*shakes head*

He's had loads of roles, post face pounding. But they were all stupid tough guy roles, Sin City included. None of them really showed him off as an actor, just a dude with a busted grill.

Thoroughly enjoyed it, especially Marisa Tomei...lordy she got nice ta-tas.
Once Upon A Time In Mexico was his career resurrection wasn't it? The bloke with the dogs

Does he do that bit into the camera where they goad the other fighter?

When he wears glasses he looks like a Mr Potato Head. But like I said, it's easy to laugh but it's a really hard film to watch. It's laid on pretty thick by the end.

Thought it was fantastic, Rourke was excellent.

In certain lights, The Ram looks as lot like a plasticine Kathleen Turner.

I saw this last night and it was amazing from start to finish. The scene where the camera follows him from the locker room at the supermarket, throught the staff room, down the stairs, through the warehouse and out to the deli counter whilst the chants of 'Ram, Ram, Ram' can be heard was just brilliant. I found myself shaking my head at how good it was - and I haven't done that since Transformers! That Oscar belongs to Rourke. The Ram was would kick the shit out of a gay Sean Penn!
