Review: Tron: Legacy

Tron: Legacy
I love Tron. So much so that, when I was growing up, 'lightcycle' featured regularly on my Christmas list (just below 'lightsaber' and just above 'Glaive'). But no amount of blind childhood adoration can escape the fact that the concept of the film doesn't hold up well to closer inspection. In that respect, this sequel is the perfect follow-up because it makes just as much sense i.e. it's utter bobbins.

I absolutely loved it. Perhaps I am an aesthete after all, becuase I was entranced.
Martin Sheen's scenery eating, Daft Punk's cameo (not to mention the perfect soundtrack), 13's charmingly niaive protege, Obi-Wan Lebowski, "I fight for the users". I could have watched it again tonight.

My favourite thing of all - I used to work on the very street young Sam landed his basejump.

*Spoilers, and I'm too lazy to use the code*

I enjoyed it, saw it in IMAX 3D mind. Bit disappointed Tron was in it so little (even his fight scene in the flashback was over too abruptly) and I was sure he was going to come back to save the day at the end thanks to him changing colour (thought it was either that or a nod to the sequel, turns out it was the latter).

Towards the end CGI Bridges looked like a PS2 Resident Evil cutscene character but hey, still an achievement, and the other effects were tremendous.

We'll see how much I like it on bluray, some films get better the more you watch them, others get decidedly worse (Die Hard 4.0 step forward).

Loved Tron, but I was 10yrs old.
I also loved putting beads up my nose & playing war over the stream with my mates.
Tron 2 does not work for me.

Interesting. As someone who was not looking forward to this movie(I'm the kind of guy who wants a Time Bandits sequel more badly then a Tron sequel), I'm surprised that after all the hype that the site absorbed your all kind of 'eh, it was okay.' I guess this shows that nostalgia can be harsh mistress, huh?

I've read a few reviews of the film now and I'm amazed at how much other people hated this film, and a lot of bile is directed at the dialogue.

As Ali says, Old Jeff Bridges comes up with "that's radical, man" and "that's bio-digital jazz!", all of which sounds like nonsensical bollocks, but his Flynn in the original was always saying stupid shit like that. Considering that he's been trapped in the Grid pretty much since, I guess it makes sense for him to still be spouting these bullshit phrases - personally I was happy with that side of things.

One thing I forgot to mention in my review though is quite a few of these 'unexplained Grid phenomena' might be down to the fact that the movie kind of banks on having a sequel. This includes a frankly bizarre early 30 second cameo by Cillian Murphy whose character seems to scream "I'll cause problems for you...next time"

Best summed up by something a colleague told me, after he came out of a screening. An extremely camp guy was enthusing, "Ooh, it was just like being a nightclub for two hours!" I think he meant it as a compliment, but it's a pretty damning indictment.

I got a definite Matrix Reloaded vibe coming out of this - initially thought I rather enjoyed it, then the more I thought about it, I couldn't really recall all that much good stuff that wasn't already in the trailers.

Matt's pretty much spot on. It's really quite a fantastic looking film, a total aesthete's wet dream. But there isn't a single memorable line of dialogue that isn't hilariously cringeworthy (the "bio-digital jazz" one being the worst offender).

Really kind of straightforward for a fantasy (young hero travels to an unknown world, must find macguffin to escape with gorgeous princess while defeating evil villain) and not half as interesting a concept as I thought it could have been. Tonnes of plot holes that you could fly a light jet through.

But, BUT... I still kind of liked it. I think. The action scenes are fun and Bridges brings a bit of Dude charm that just about pushes it over the finish line. Aside from the fact it's a $200m Disney tentpole movie, it could well be a future cult classic like the original was, purely because it's so bizarrely shonky in some places and so absurdly polished in others.

I will say this though, there were times when I thought CGI Jeff Bridges looked astounding, really, really spookily good. Remember, this is all fully animated and fully lit, and it's not a minor role either, he's in dozens of scenes. It falters at times (animators still can't do mouths) but we're definitely clawing up the other side of the Uncanny Valley.

The bit with the pig really pissed me off, though.
