Review: True Grit

True Grit
From time to time a film comes along that marries the perfect story, perfect script, perfect director and perfect cast. Chinatown had it, The Godfather had it and True Grit's got it. Sit back and wallow in its sweet perfection.

Saw this today. It was "ok".

Maaaatt Daaaamon is ruined forever, though - especially after picking up that speech impediment in this...

I really liked it but recently I'm becoming more skeptical of Coen brother films. It felt a bit empty at times and ended quite quickly. The actress (steinfeld?) was excellent though... and I usually hate such a cliched overly-mature character.

Did anyone else find the soundtrack a bit sentimental and repetitive?

yes yes we've seen your olde tyme motion pictures, I think Damon was given more of a character to work with, where as in the original La Boeuf just assisted in the journey and was a smaller part up until the end of course which is basically the same in both films as it is in the novel too.

Yes, we've had cinemas and film channels for a number of years now.

Jesus, remember when it took a year after the US to get a film, then another year for it to be on VHS, and then another year to be on telly?

Spoilt nowadays. Film4 is the best.

ahem its better than transformers 2 so it must be 5 stars!!

sorry ali! Loved Bridges in this, if it wasnt for that bloody prince turn king and his silly stutter he'd have another beautiful statue on his mantle! and your right Damon played his party spot on...made the character a little more necessary to the plot.

I really enjoyed this. Wouldn't go so far as to call it a 5-star film, but it's a really great example of a simple story made watchable through a variety of brilliant performances. Bridges is brilliant as expected and Hailee Steinfeld is excellent, but I really liked Matt Damon - gave an extra few layers to what could have been a joke of a role.

Like most Coen films, might take another watch to truly appreciate it for what it is, but I really enjoyed it - and I hate Westerns. Still, it's no No Country.
