Shutter Island, the latest from director Martin Scorsese, is far from perfect, but it is an excellent showcase for a master filmmaker who is still working at the top of his game, despite being in the twilight of his career.

With Where the Wild Things Are, Spike Jonze not only solidifies his reputation as a great director (as if there were any doubt), but he also demonstrates an uncanny understanding of precisely what it's like to be a kid. With this gorgeous and touching adaptation of the beloved children's book by author Maurice Sendak, Jonze and screenwriter David Eggers have managed to capture the essence of childhood; all the confusion, fear, pain, anger, loneliness, and above all the
joy of being a kid are evident throughout.

The Informant! is the best Coen Brothers movie not actually directed by the Coen Brothers. Insanely prolific director Steven Soderbergh has managed to capture the distinct Coen vibe – mainly the sardonic sense of humor and dry wit – while making it completely his own. The final result is an engaging, intricate movie about a whistleblower that manages to double as a send-up of movies about whistleblowers.

By now, every good movie nerd knows that it's not easy to strike the perfect balance between humour and horror, and the list of films that do it well is depressingly short. Well, now you can add Zombieland to the list.

Modern cinema just wouldn’t be the same without its underdogs: because everyone just loves watching chump become champ. You know the type: the no-hopers who shock the pros, the Davids who bring down the Goliaths, the rank outsiders who come from nowhere to beat the odds and shit all over the bookies. Underdogs come from all walk...

This latest effort from director David Fincher (Seven, Fight Club) is an intensely detailed, powerfully thrilling look into the nature of obsession and the power of fear; a throwback of sorts to the type of films made during the very era it depicts. The film is razor sharp and wholly engaging, filled to the brim with fantastic ...

Clerks II is a good movie. Unfortunately, it is also a prime example of just how creatively stunted Kevin Smith truly is. It’s frustrating because the film is every bit as clever, witty, and perversely fun as the original, but therein lies the problem; throughout the movie, there’s a sense of “been there, done that.” There ar...

Allow me start this review by saying right off the bat that Ultraviolet is already the frontrunner for one of the worst movies of the year. I should probably qualify that statement; I suspect there have probably worse movies released already this year, and there will probably be dozens of terrible movies released over the next ...

Serenity is the big-screen adaptation of the short-lived cult TV series, Firefly, as well as creator Joss Whedon’s first fully written and directed feature. Unfortunately, it’s also probably the end of the road for this particular franchise (it performed rather poorly at the box office) but like the television show that spawned...
