  • The £10 DVD Bargain Challenge: Week two - Rob's turn

    Movie Feature | Rob | 10th July 2012

For the second week of our £10 DVD Bargain Challenge (*dramatic opera crescendo*), I decided to go down the charity shop route. Along with card shops and banks, my local town knows a thing or two about charity shops. Plenty of potential then to sniff out a cheap bargain, and help cure cancer, £1.50 at a time. Plus, I distinctly remember seeing District 9 on Blu-ray for £1.80 at The Cats Protection a few months back and was hoping it was still there.

  • Red Tails

    Movie Review | Rob | 8th June 2012

A long time ago in a ranch far, far away...
It is a dark time for George Lucas. Forced to put his
WWII project on hold and desperate to tell the stories of
the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American fighter pilot

squadron, Lucas was told 'No' by the evil studios, who deemed
a film with an all black cast unmarketable. 23 years later, a time
when Hollywood wasn't quite so racist, Lucas finally made his film,
thanks to galactic bucks from his own, overflowing Death Star wallet.

  • Casa De Mi Padre

    Movie Review | Rob | 6th June 2012

"It's funny because Will Ferrell speaks Spanish!" was probably the gist of the Casa De Mi Padre brainstorming session. Yes, Will Ferrell does speak excellent Spanish, and yes, he is very funny with it. But this low-budget Spanish language Mexican western action comedy caper offers more than just cheap racial stereotypes: it's one of the funniest, cleverest spoofs since Hot Shots. Yeah you heard me right, Scary Movie 4.

  • Top Cat

    Movie Review | Rob | 3rd June 2012

"He's the boss, he's a pip, he's the championship, he's the most tip top, Top Cat!" When I was young that catchy tune used to fill me with joy. Top Cat was, by a country mile, my favourite Hanna-Barbera creation. Now, thanks to this slap-dash, Flash-animated big screen 3D mutation from Mexico, Don Gato y su Pandilla (as it is in Spanish) leaves yet another childhood memory is in tatters.

  • Safe

    Movie Review | Rob | 1st May 2012

An entire week passed between me watching Jason Statham's newest addition to his one-man sub-genre and writing up this review. No matter though, because Safe fits nicely into The Stath's typical movie mould. It has guns, punching, car chases, a suit and another odd Cockney/American hybrid accent. Hell, I could've copied and pasted my Transporter 3 review, changed around a few words and no one would've been any the wiser.

  • Mirror Mirror

    Movie Review | Rob | 3rd April 2012

The trailers for Tarsem Singh's lavish interpretation of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs totally sell the film short, filled with cheap puns, singing and dancing. On this evidence, the grittier Lord Of The Rings-esque Snow White And The Huntsman - due out in June - looked set to leave its colourful rival out in the cold, dark woods. Don't be put off just yet. On closer inspection, Mirror Mirror might just be the fairest of them all: an utterly delightful and faithful re-telling of the classic fairytale – a dazzling treat for the eyes from start to finish.

  • StreetDance 2

    Movie Review | Rob | 30th March 2012

A couple of years back I reviewed Step Up 3D and surprised even myself by awarding it three stars, claiming that it delivered on its promises, namely impressive dance moves and some superb 3D. Yeah, the acting was atrocious and the plot non-existent. But still! DANCING! StreetDance 2 - the follow-up no one asked for to 2010's StreetDance 3D - doesn't get off quite so lightly. The inexcusable choice to make 'Street Dance' one word angers me, and that's only start of the problems.

  • 21 Jump Street

    Movie Review | Rob | 13th March 2012

21 Jump Street: a US cop show from the late 80s that a lot of us probably never heard of. It was about youthful-looking cops going undercover in high schools, lasted five seasons, kick-started the career of Johnny Depp, boasted guest stars like Brad Pitt and Josh Brolin, and had a kick-ass intro that's all very Saved By The Bell. So then, perfect fodder for a 21st Century piss-take.

  • Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

    Movie Review | Rob | 3rd February 2012

Michael Caine has had a long, glittering career spanning five decades. He's been nominated for an Academy Award in every decade since the 1960s. He's even a Knight of The Realm. The man truly is an icon of British cinema. Surely, though, flying a giant bee and high-fiving The Rock has to be his greatest achievement to date.

  • Man On A Ledge

    Movie Review | Rob | 30th January 2012

Go into this cold turkey and you could be forgiven for thinking Man On A Ledge is a contemporary commentary on the current state of the economy. Let's look at the evidence, shall we? It's set in New York, there are mentions of "this economy" followed by tutting, Ed Harris wears a sharp suit and smokes cigars like a boss (lit with $100 bills I hope ) and, oh, there's a bloke perched on a ledge threatening to throw himself off.
