My favourite arguments on Wikipedia TV show talk pages

Ed Williamson

16th April 2013

Wikipedia talk pages are a rare kind of douchebag magnet, in that they offer a platform of legitimacy for some of the very worst people on the internet.

Not only can you dispute endlessly what tend to be matters of basic fact, you can do so with recourse to all kinds of arbitrary rules and codes of practice. Even though these rules were made up by some guy who made a website, you are permitted, even encouraged, to behave as if their importance rivals that of the Geneva Convention.

As a man with more free time than most, I spent a few happy hours trawling the talk pages of some popular TV shows. It turns out that TV sparks some interesting debate, and some downright brain-wrongs.

Dad's Army

"

Should it not have been called dads' army. I'm sure there was more than one dad in it. 82.42.126.68

It probably should've been, but it wasn't! Bevo74

An interesting point, which make me think that ... Dad's ... the possessive form, obviously places an emphasis on one single person/dad who possesses the army. This, of course, would be Mainwaring; it is he who is the Dad with his personal army, and he lives this out so readily. (The possessive form also makes perfect sense of Hodges' barbed quips about Mainwaring being 'Napoleon').

Follow-up question: Is Mainwaring (and Elizabeth) known to have any child/ren (i.e. his own biological child/ren) or does the platoon constitute his child/ren? Benyoch

Not sure exactly how this is done, or if this is the correct place, but there is an error in NY state law in S01E03. The father of the obducted girl aledgedy buys a bottle of wine at a "bodega". I would expect a bodega to be a small grocery store, and in NY you can't buy wine in a grocery store, only beer and wine coolers, and the bottle was not that of a wine cooler. EDinNY

I understand that sources reported that Laurence Fishburne would be a recurring character on this show. However, the pilot has now aired and he is CLEARLY billed as a regular. Whoever keeps moving him back to recurring status needs to stop. Old Soldier
"
"
No, I don't. The source is the Hollywood Reporter, and very reliable. The opening credits for the pilot are not indicative of who is main cast or who will recur. The pilot is a one-shot production used to sell the show, and final billing won't appear until the second episode. You are interpreting the billing as cast status, which WP:OR. I'm going by a reliable source. To put Fishburne in the main cast, you need to supply a reliable source that main cast billing is correct. (BTW, you're doing this selectively; several others still listed as recurring were billed in the same way as Fisburne. What goes for one goes for them all, so be consistent.) Drmargi
"
"
The pilot only lists Dancy, Mikkelsen, Dhavernas, Park and Fishburne as regulars, so, no, I'm not. And frankly, no source is as reliable as ON-SCREEN EVIDENCE. You have arbitrarily decided that Fishburne is a recurring character, when the series says otherwise. I'll be moving him back to regular status every time you move him. We'll see who gets tired first. Old Soldier
"
"
Threat to edit war duly noted. That sort of conduct will get you blocked in a rush around here. As I noted before, the pilot billing covers that episode only, and is not a reliable indicator of later billing. See the pilots of most televisions shows, and you'll see what I mean. There's nothing arbitrary in what I've done. You can't have it both ways. If you want the billed cast listed as regulars, you list them all. Moreover, I have the NBC website as back-up. Go look at it. Drmargi

The more I look at this page the more I realize it needs a complete and total rewrite. There's all kinds of facts on the page that are misinterprited, misrepresented, unclarifited (i.e. I'm not sure why the Seven portion of the article refers to Jumping the Shark, except that it's someone's notion that when seven was introduced they were in fact jumping the shark, which is an opinon anyway), outright erroneous, and in many cases items that were addressed in an episode for the purposes of comedy are represented as factual despite being later negated. I don't know who to contact about a rewrite, and I think it would be a bit presumtous to do it myself, so i'm hoping someone will respond to this. Smokachu13

Fun House

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION DELETED!

This essential information was actually needed to explain the difference of the Fun House itself between the USA and UK versions.

The US version looked like an actual "house" where the UK version was actually designed like a "Fun House" ride at a fairground.

Leave that section ALONE!!! Emoboy2

STOP FIDDLING WITH THE DESIGNS ON THE UK FH SECTION

I didn't do hours after hours of research into this (albeit from a very displeased girlfriend) to put up onto here and MY OWN bebo page for someone else who has been causing stress for readers of the article on the Black Narcissus to fiddle about with.

An encyclopedia is supposed to have as much information as possible on each of its subjects. Because my information is very articulate, leave it alone! Emoboy2

Can anyone confirm Calleigh Duquesne's rank? Other contributers say that she is a lieutenant now (i.e., Horatio's rank). Is this true? If so, in what episode did her promotion take place? DreamroseTavua
"
"
Yeah, some person keeps "fixing" my edits re: Calleigh, insisting that she's now a SERGEANT!...only Rex Linn's character(Frank Tripp) is a sergeant now... Michaela92399
"

Michaela, I just redid this again, after some person who thinks he's a die-hard fan keeps "insisting" that she's a SERGEANT!...I agree with you:only Frank Tripp is a sergeant, NOT Calleigh!

I'll keep watch on this page to make sure that Calleigh remains a CSI Level 3 and NOT a sergeant!...hope you don't mind... Baldwin91006

I have just undid the "Detective Sergeant" edit again. The person who does this likely remembers when Caine was out of town and Calleigh filled in for him. At the time someone made a comment about whether she would be "Lt. Duquesne" soon. I believe the editers changing her rank think that meant she must have already been a sergeant - yet it only meant she was being teased by her co-workers about temporarily filling Caine's shoes. Bloo

"
If you see Season 6 first episode Rio Dan Cooper Brendan Fehr called her Lt.Duquesne. Kamyar
"
"
As explained above, he was referring to Caine being out of town and Calleigh being in charge. She has never even taken the test to be promoted to Sergeant. Come up with a real citation she is a Lt. Not just an interpretation based on a minor character's comment. Belle
"
"
refering to USA federal law calling someone with higher or lower rank is crime and sometimes may take to high sentences. so you want to say that in a well known TV show they make this kind of mistakes???? Kamyar
"
"
The show takes a number of dramatic liberties with reality. Further, Cooper could have made an honest mistake, thinking she was promoted in Caine's absence, or he could have used it as a point of reference, saying to think about the responsibilities that the lieutenant who heads the department and not to think like she's just a detective. To use one address by another officer as evidence of a promotion is synthesis of a pretty strong degree. C.Fred

hey man you just say that something could meant something. stop saying it. the only thing that we know is that he called her Lt. so she is a Lt. if you have something that proves she is not Lt. then bring it on. if in future reveald that she is not Lt. we can change the title. now please do not get involve in an edit conflict... Kamyar
"
"
In the future, please slow down and re-read what you are posting before you post it. Your statement makes no sense. One character referring to Duquesne as a Lt. does not make her a Lt. When something happens on the show that officially establishes that she is a Lt., we can change it. Until then, in my opinion, her designation should stand as is. TheBigFish
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Why is there no plot section in this article? I can accept that it was episodic, but there should at least be a description, not in the lead, saying what the show is about, and mentioning continuity arcs and recurring themes. I would do something, but I don't think I've ever watched a full episode, let alone the entire series. mattbuck
Blossom

It says that Blossom's older is a recovering drug addict, but that is wrong. Anthony is infact a recovering alcholic. I will change it to make it correct. Mr. C.C.
(I'm 99% sure he actually was a drug addict, but if I get involved what does that say about me?)
