OSCARS 2008

AND THE AWARDS GO TO...

Another year, another lavish Oscars ceremony; this year’s awards were more opulent than Elton John’s bathroom and about a shocking as the sunrise. Still, there’s no arguing that No Country For Old Men deserves all the praise it gets, and the acting awards all look fairly on the money. Elsewhere, boo to the Academy for jipping the lovely Amy Adams for Best Song (three noms and no win? Get out!) and yay to the Academy for recognising the best film of last year, The Bourne Ultimatum , even if only in the technicals. So, let’s start looking forward to 2009 – Indy for Best Picture anyone?

Best Picture: No Country For Old Men
Losers: There Will Be Blood, Michael Clayton, Juno, Atonement

Verdict:
Justice is served! It would have been a sin for anything other than No Country or There Will Be Blood to win, and anyone who’s seen both of those frontrunners would agree that the Coens’ effort is the superior of the two. A worthier winner you will not find; check out our five-star review here.

Best Director: Joel & Ethan Coen (No Country For Old Men)
Losers: Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood), Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton), Jason Reitman (Juno), Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell And The Butterfly)

Verdict:
You can’t have a Best Picture win without taking home the Best Director gong as well – it’s scientific fact and it’s been proved in labs. PTA might feel a little jipped (given that he wrote There Will Be Blood as well, whereas No Country is an adapted screenplay) but this is virtuoso stuff from the Coens, their first win since Fargo in 1996.

Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood)
Losers: George Clooney (Michael Clayton), Tommy Lee Jones (In The Valley Of Elah), Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd), Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises)

Verdict:
Well, duh. Stick Daniel Day-Lewis under a bushy moustache and a silly hat and you’re guaranteed instant awards gratification. Take him out of There Will Be Blood and what do you have? He is the movie. A towering performance and a win that goes some way to rectifying the boob in 2002 when he was snubbed for Gangs Of New York.

Best Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men)
Losers: Hal Holbrook (Into The Wild), Casey Affleck (The Assassination Of Jesse James), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Charlie Wilson’s War), Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton)

Verdict:
Again, no surprises here. Bardem is arguably the strongest of the three male leads in No Country – he’s certainly the most memorable. Casey Affleck might feel hard done by after a fine turn as Robert Ford, but this was Bardem’s show and as we know, when he wants something, he gets it, friendo.

Best Actress: Marion Cottilard (La Vie En Rose)
Losers: Julie Christie (Away From Her), Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth: The Golden Age), , Laura Linney (The Savages), Ellen Page (Juno)

Verdict:
I’ll be honest, I haven’t seen La Vie En Rose because a) I’m not French and foreign languages are silly and b) all I know about Edith Piaf I can fit on the back of a postage stamp. Still, it was a battle between her and Julie Christie in the ‘see who can be more disabled and crusty’ stakes – perhaps Christie was punished for her terrible dress sense.

Best Supporting Actress: Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton)
Losers: Cate Blanchett (I’m Not There), Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone), Ruby Dee (American Gangster), Saoirse Ronan (Atonement)

Verdict:
Swinton was always a good outside bet – my Ł11.50 in winnings testifies to that. The other nominees proved either too young (Ronan), too old (Dee), too unknown (Ryan) or too Cate Blanchett (Cate Blanchett) to win, so I guess Swinton wins by default. We can all put on a frizzy wig and pretend we’re Bob Dylan – I’m doing it right now.
