Corey Haim dies of drug overdose

Corey Haim, teen icon and one half of eighties phenomenon 'the Coreys', has died of an apparent overdose, aged 38.

On the scale of sympathetic celebrity deaths, ranging from John Lennon at the top (genius artist cruelly taken before his time) to Hitler at the bottom (total douchebag), Corey Haim's passing ranks somewhere in the 'Jacko Zone' - it's kinda sad, and he used to be cool, but... well, he sort of brought it on himself.

I won't shed a tear tonight in honour of Corey Haim's death, apparently by overdose - prescription drugs were found on the scene, but Haim was a known substance abuser. What I will say is that Haim's (mostly shitty) movies probably meant a great deal to a kid growing up in the eighties: he was the poster child for behaving badly and getting away with it, to a greasy sax soundtrack.

I just think it's a shame that a lust for fame grips some people so hard, it consumes their life - they literally feel like they don't exist if they aren't on a screen or in the paper. The video below is a clip from Haim and fellow Corey Feldman's reality show, The Two Coreys, which shows an obviously zonked Haim fuck up his last shot at credibility. By the end of it, he's stumbling over his only line for a cameo in a crappy, straight-to-DVD movie. Now that's sad. I'd imagine having Corey Feldman as your moral guardian would feel even worse than being a drug addict.

So, let's let Corey Haim rest - his death may be yet another small reminder that the eighties are gradually slipping through our fingers, but it's probably pity most of us feel, not genuine sorrow. Still, if Judge Reinhold was to slip away during the night? I. Would. Lose. My. Shit.
