The 3D Musketeers

Paul W.S. Anderson has signed on to direct a new adaptation of The Three Musketeers... in 3D! That's one dimension each!

Of all the latest 3D ventures that have been mooted in the past couple of months, this has got to be met with the biggest shrug.

The last version of Alexandre Dumas' novel was 1993's overhyped "big-name cast" offer of Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt, Charlie Sheen and *shudders* Chris O'Donnell. With Anderson at the helm, the hack behind Death Race and AVP, we have ourselves a real contender for Worst Movie Pitch of the Year.

Anderson himself says: "We are definitely modernising 'The Three Musketeers' without compromising the fun of shooting a period piece...Our version is rich in eye-popping action, romance and adventure."

It doesn't exactly inspire confidence that Anderson will pay careful attention to historical accuracy, does it?

Plus, with each main character being armed with a sharp, pointy sword, you can bet your feathered hat that there'll be more blatant misuse of 3D gimmicks than you can swash your buckle at.

It still has a chance of being a hit at the box office though: The Three Musketeers is a story that has been popular for over 150 years and spawned more than a few successful films in the past.

Plus, with a release date currently set for 2011, let's hope the studio takes a leaf out of the 1993 version's book and prepares a tie-in mega power ballad to rival that of 'All for Love' by the raspy-voiced trio of Bryan Adams, Sting and Rod Stewart. Choooooon.
