    The gender-discriminated world of Suffragette is so far removed from my everyday life as to be completely unrecognisable, much less relatable. Which means that I should either a) credit how far we have come as a society since then, or b) immediately own up to the fact that I am a 30-something white male who has never had to contend with any prejudices or glass ceilings in his life. Either way, join me as I nervously criticise a film about the kind of tragic societal injustice of which I am entirely unqualified to discuss thanks to my having a penis.

  • Edge Of Tomorrow

    "See Paris die!" In 2005, Warner Bros took a novel approach to marketing their horror remake House Of Wax: they knew audiences wanted to see the film's star, Paris Hilton, meet a grisly end, and they didn't shy away from spoiling her character's fate. You can't help but think, then, that Warners have missed a trick promoting Edge Of Tomorrow, a sci-fi time-loop thriller that sees star Tom Cruise killed in around 50 different ways, only to wake up very much alive the morning before. "See Tom die!" would get way more people into the cinema than "Live. Die. Repeat" and that's a shame, because Edge Of Tomorrow is a terrific action movie that deserves to be seen by as many people as possible. It's taut, twisted and blackly funny in ways that only movies in which Tom Cruise gets crushed under the wheels of a truck can be.

  • The Raven

    The Raven is a fairly neat concept in theory. A down and out Edgar Allen Poe (John Cusack) is hired by old-timey police to solve a series of grisly killings based on his own macabre stories. There's a little bit of Saw, a touch of Basic Instinct and even a smidgen of Sherlock Holmes in the screenplay; it's equal parts gothic horror, murder mystery and action adventure, just a few doors down From Hell. It's not a bad idea, but that description probably makes it sound a little more exciting than it actually is – for all its shadowy intrigue and booze-tinged whimsy, The Raven is a story that even Poe would admit needs a few rewrites.

  • Safe House

    Confession: I went to a screening of this film over a month ago and, as the credits rolled, I turned to my missus and said “I’m going to have to write my review for this straight away because that was one of the most forgettable films I’ve ever seen”. I didn’t. And now I’m scrabbling around for things to say about a generic action thriller in which both Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds coast along in bog standard roles. To be fair, if they didn’t make much of an effort, I don’t see why I should.
