  • The Magnificent Seven

    If you find yourself staring at the marketing for Sony's The Magnificent Seven thinking 'Who is this for?', then you're not alone: I've just seen it and I still don't know. It is an odd choice for such a straight-laced remake, particularly in the current age of the gender swap but PARTICULARLY because the Seven Samurai trope is the most well-worn story in cinematic history, having been remodelled in various forms over the years. We've enjoyed it in ronin form, as a western, told via science-fiction, remade as comedy and even reinvented with animated insects. They say each new generation deserves their own version of all the classic stories, and I daresay the 2016 adaptation of Magnificent 7 is the version this generation deserves: polished but still remarkably unremarkable.

  • Terminator Genisys

    Terminator Genisys represents everything that is wrong with modern movies. Absolutely everything. It is a hopelessly contrived revisit to a once famous franchise, long since dragged through the mud and reanimated - for the third time - in the hopes that it can repeat past tricks. It is a reboot that fails to perform the basic function of a reboot - to start afresh with a blank canvas - instead preferring to muddy the waters of an already terminally confusing timeline. Worst of all, it is chronically boring and manages to make a movie about a robot uprising seem about as exciting as the launch of Tidal. In short, it is the worst film of the year by far; a catastrophically bad moviegoing experience that not only manages to insult fans of the first (and only) two decent Terminator movies but manages to botch the franchise to such an extent you wonder if even the 12-year-olds it's aimed at will be impressed by its static action and needlessly convoluted plot.

  • G.I. Joe: Retaliation

    When this movie was pulled from release last summer weeks before it was due to hit cinemas, the internet was rife with theories about why. Was it just because the studio decided to post-convert to grab a slice of the 3D pie? Or did Channing Tatum become such a big star that reshoots were necessary to pad out his role in the film? Whatever the reason, it's safe to say that the subsequent nine months were NOT spent trying to make sure that this baffling, ridiculous juggernaut of mindlessness made a lick of sense. Because, despite having an extra nine months to somehow improve on itself, G.I. Joe: Retaliation ended up providing some of the most fun I have ever had watching one of the worst films I have ever seen.

  • I Saw The Devil

    Unlike their most excellent cuisine, Koreans seemingly prefer their revenge served cold. I'm hardly the world's foremost expert on Asian cinema (nutshell CV: hated Ringu, loved Audition, pretended to get the references in Kill Bill) but it seems like the revenge flick is a genre that's far better catered for in the East - they gave us Sympathy For Mr Vengeance, so in return, the West gave them Faster, starring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. No contest.
