  • Review: Avengers: Endgame is a fitting tribute to Earth's mightiest franchise

    Movie Review | Matt Looker | 25th April 2019

Fan or sceptic, hardened critic or casual movie-watcher, there is no denying that Marvel Studios has changed the face of cinema. These past 20-odd Marvel movies – for all the good and bad, for all the shawarmas and dramas, the Lady Sifs and Malekiths, the Jotunheims and Ed Norton times – have been a historic undertaking and seen record-breaking success. And Avengers: Endgame knows it. Not only does this film reach the narrative culmination of the Avengers to date, but it’s simultaneously a beautiful send-off, a greatest hits tour and a lap of honour. This is Marvel celebrating Marvel, and it is thoroughly deserved.

  • Miles Ahead

    Movie Review | Ed Williamson | 14th April 2016

Miles Ahead is obviously an awful punning title for a Miles Davis biopic, like "The Biggie They Are, The Harder They Smalls" or something. Or so I thought until someone told me it was the name of one of his albums, which reveals how much I know about jazz and how much Miles Davis knew about good puns.

  • Iron Man 3

    Movie Review | Matt | 24th April 2013

Just how do you follow The Avengers? Surely going back to single-hero stories after that huge-scale monster blockbuster just seems like a disappointing step backwards? God, Marvel have really dug themselves a billion-dollar hole, haven't they? I bet they’ve been puzzling over what to do next while using a solid-gold, diamond-encrusted head scratcher. Well, it's lucky for them that, as with phase one of Marvel's Cinematic Universe, this next chapter is being led by the shiniest instrument in their toolbox: Robert Downey Jr (who outshines even the most polished of Iron Man suits). And, with Shane Black in charge, we get more Downey Jr than ever before in what is not only the best Tony Stark film to date, but also Marvel's most mature output yet.

  • Flight

    Movie Review | Matt | 29th January 2013

As with every year, the Best Actor Oscar of 2013 will no doubt be given to the actor who has portrayed the greatest character affliction. So let's tally up: Bradley Cooper had mood swings, Joaquin Phoenix had um... something, Daniel Day-Lewis had... a beard? And Hugh Jackman sang. A lot. Lucky then for Denzel Washington who plays an alcoholic. Also, pity poor John Hawkes for not even getting nommed.

  • Captain Planet, motherfucker

    Movie News | Ali | 31st August 2011

I think Don Cheadle just usurped Will Smith to claim the mantle of My Favourite Black Guy.

  • Iron Man 2

    Movie Review | Ali | 28th April 2010

The original Iron Man's success came something like a bolt from the blue; a very welcome superhero debut that nailed its playful tone and established itself as the first part of a much bigger universe. The sequel, however, comes with certain expectations attached: now we know the character's origins, he kinda has to... y'know, do something.

  • Iron Man 2 poster: it's War Machine!

Here's your first glimpse at Mecha-Cheadle: this first Iron Man 2 poster sees the debut of aluminium ally War Machine. Grrrr!

  • Crash

    Movie Review | Ali | 22nd August 2005

And so back to reality. This summer we've been treated to Emo planes, chocolate paedophiles and runaway clones, which, although varied in quality, all had one thing in common - escapism. No one loves getting lost in a film more than me, but every once in a while it takes a hard-hitting movie like Crash to shake you out of yo...

  • The Assassination Of Richard Nixon

    Movie Review | Ali | 15th April 2005

I can't lay claim to being Sean Penn's biggest fan - anyone humourless enough to defend Jude Law deserves to be taken down a few notches in my book - but I can grudgingly accept that he's pretty good at this acting lark. While I wouldn't necessarily label him as 'our generation's De Niro' as some people have, he's rather adept ...
