  • What if Ethan Hawke played ALL the superheroes? Huh? What happens then?

    Movie Feature | Ali Gray | 27th August 2018

Indie actor Ethan Hawke caused shockwaves in the nerd community this week when he dared suggest that superhero movies are not as good as Ingrid Bergman movies. So, Ethan Hawke thinks we're a group of illiterate and reactionary morons, huh? BURN ETHAN HUNT TO THE GROUND.

  • Maudie

    Movie Review | Ed Williamson | 1st August 2017

Since Maudie is a film whose hat hangs largely on its two main performances, and since the critics on the posters are starting to talk about Oscars for them, let's have a word about performances and whether there's any value in qualifying them.

  • Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets

    Movie Review | Matt Looker | 27th July 2017

Anyone who has read this site's review of Jupiter Ascending or pretty much any of the Transformer films will know that we tend to be more lenient than most when it comes to over-ambitious sci-fi epics. We forgive atrocious dialogue and overlong running times in order to reward dumb fun alien shit. So, frankly, Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets is lucky to have us, because this is a movie in which legendary filmmaker Luc Besson doesn't bother looking at the script twice nor his watch once while he continuously plays with an endless line-up of CGI distractions. This is him procrastinating with his own imagination in the same way that you or I would dick about on Twitter rather than get on with any real work. This is Luc Besson's Faff Element.

  • The Magnificent Seven

    Movie Review | Ali Gray | 14th September 2016

If you find yourself staring at the marketing for Sony's The Magnificent Seven thinking 'Who is this for?', then you're not alone: I've just seen it and I still don't know. It is an odd choice for such a straight-laced remake, particularly in the current age of the gender swap but PARTICULARLY because the Seven Samurai trope is the most well-worn story in cinematic history, having been remodelled in various forms over the years. We've enjoyed it in ronin form, as a western, told via science-fiction, remade as comedy and even reinvented with animated insects. They say each new generation deserves their own version of all the classic stories, and I daresay the 2016 adaptation of Magnificent 7 is the version this generation deserves: polished but still remarkably unremarkable.

  • Thoughts on Boyhood and fatherhood

    Movie Feature | Ali Gray | 11th July 2014

Boyhood is a film that will say a lot of different things to a lot of different people. I became a father in 2012 and though I don't think you have to have children to appreciate it at all – it's a masterpiece – the fact I have a young son of my own meant the film connected with me in ways I wasn't expecting. Here's my take on what Boyhood meant to me.

  • Boyhood

    Movie Review | Ed Williamson | 7th July 2014

Approaching the end of Richard Linklater's 166-minute Boyhood, I realised that some of the early scenes were now something of a faded memory to me, and that I couldn't fully remember what the younger Mason had looked like. This reminded me of some experience or other, which I later realised was that of watching my own family age. And that's because Boyhood is as close as cinema gets to real life.

  • Sinister

    Movie Review | Ed Williamson | 5th October 2012

It irritates the hell out of me when people use obviously fake computers in movies. A black screen with green text like it's 1982. A free-typed database command like 'FIND ALL GUNSHOT VICTIMS IN SAN DIEGO'. An analogue beep as a search engine returns its results. So I am delighted to report that in horror movie Sinister, Ethan Hawke uses realistic search terms in Google. He talks to people on iChat. He uses real commands on dropdown menus, moves stuff to his recycle bin, and encodes video into .mov files. How scary is the film? Um ... it's ... did I mention how good the computer bits are?

  • Daybreakers

    Movie Review | Ali | 10th January 2010

Rather like how human blood is in short supply in this vampire thriller, original ideas are a scarce commodity in Hollywood these days. The vampire genre in particular has been sucked dry so completely by Twi-hards and tweenies, the moment screenwriters Michael and Peter Spierig pitched the very adult concept for Daybreakers, desperate producers must have sunk their teeth into it like thirsty bloodsuckers.

  • Daybreakers gets new poster

    Movie News | Ali | 18th November 2009

Otherwise known as Another Fucking Vampire Movie, Ethan Hawke's Daybreakers has a new poster, and you can check out the trailer while you're at it. At least these vampires don't sparkle like gaywads.
