  • Gracepoint to be loads better than Broadchurch because America

    TV Video | Ed Williamson | 13th May 2014

It will too, won't it? Even though this pilot looks to be literally identical to the ITV version save for the fact that Nick Nolte's wearing a hat to play the creepy old guy who runs the newsagent and everyone reckons is a paedo, the plan is apparently to take it in a different direction from here. And inevitably it'll be great and no one will be able to remember why they ever watched ITV in the first place. Could you remake Midsomer Murders next please, guys?

  • Stoker

    Movie Review | Neil | 25th February 2013

Poor old Park Chan-wook. One minute you're the director of the blistering Sympathy For Mr Vengeance and Oldboy, the next you're the director of I'm A Cyborg, But That's OK and Thirst. What to do to regain your former prowess? The answer, obviously, is to make a new film in a language other than your own, from a script by a Prison Break actor, which on the surface looks like a remake of a beloved Hitchcock classic. What could possibly go wrong?

  • Silver Linings Playbook

    Movie Review | Ed Williamson | 21st November 2012

I have no idea what 'playbook' means, being British. How am I possibly supposed to grasp a concept so arcane; so steeped in Americana? You might as well ask me to participate in a rodeo or wage a baseless imperialist war against a country wholly unprepared to defend itself against mine. A good thing, then, that the UK marketers of Silver Linings Playbook had the sense to make the word very small in all its promotional material. A less good thing that Ali wrote a whole feature about this before I got around to writing the introduction I'd been planning based on this premise. One day I'll have more than one idea in my head at a time, then I'll be unstoppable.

  • The Five-Year Engagement

    Movie Review | Ali | 20th June 2012

I've been putting off my review of The Five-Year Engagement for ages now, despite having written notes at the screening I attended about two weeks ago. Exhaustion is about to consume me, so instead of putting the review off for another day, I'm just going to forget about the in between parts and fancy words and cohesion that comes with a proper write-up and just let you read my raw notes. Think of it as an interesting case study. Or, like a massively lazy excuse for a post. Sorry. Normal service will resume soon. Most probably.

  • Animal Kingdom

    Movie Review | Ali | 24th February 2011

Every once in a while, a fantastic new indie movie washes up on our shores, having surfed a wave of critical and commercial success from its native country... only for it to get utterly corn-holed at the UK box-office because no one can be bothered to go see it. Animal Kingdom is one such movie and you owe it a couple of hours of your life, because... really, what else are you going to do this weekend? Call your Mum? Please.
