  • Review: Captain Marvel is predictably great fun by numbers

    Movie Review | Matt Looker | 5th March 2019

It seems strange now to consider any new Marvel movie to be a risk. After 20 films, each amassing box office receipts equal to the size of entire national economies, surely a new instalment of the MCU can only ever be a sure thing at this stage? And yet, here we are, with a film that is about risky as Marvel gets now; not because this is its first female-fronted film (Wonder Woman has kapowed that glass ceiling already), but because we are dealing with a character most won’t know, with abilities that are supposed to be more powerful than anything we have ever seen before, played by a still relatively obscure lead actress. Oh and there’s that little thing of presenting her as the Endgame saviour of the Infinity War. Have no doubt, Marvel is rolling the dice here, even if they are safely loaded.

  • Spy

    Movie Review | Ali Gray | 10th June 2015

I'm not sure I understand how people continually lump Melissa McCarthy into the same category of comedians as the likes of Kevin James (actually, I do understand, I just choose to ignore it), because she's so much more talented than him it's barely a contest. Comic timing? Check. Pathos? Check. A habit of making her co-stars appear funnier by proxy? Check. These are not qualities you typically associate with Paul Blart: Mall Cop. McCarthy, on the other hand, is the complete package, and she furthers her winning relationship with director Paul Feig in Spy, albeit to not quite so winning effect as previous team-ups The Heat and Bridesmaids. The most important stat for the non-believers? There is only one [1] pratfall in Spy; Paul Blart: Mall Cop had 25.

  • Fair play to the monkey, he's got me bang to rights there

    Movie News | Ali | 19th August 2013

The poster for Jude Law's crime comedy is 100% accurate, 1000% weird. Unless your name is Dom Hemingway, in which case it's just bloody wrong. Is your name Dom Hemingway? The Shiznit team would like to speak with you about a feature we haven't properly thought through. (Via IMP).

One of these posters for Anna Karenina is not like the others: can you guess which one it is? I know, it's pretty tough.

Here are your films for this week, the first selection of 2012! Wow, it's like we're in the future and, therefore, all these films represent the very best, cutting-edge, state-of-the-art examples of modern movie-making. Nah, not really - it's all old shit.

  • Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows

    Movie Review | Matt | 13th December 2011

Once again, Guy Ritchie delves into Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's lesser-known casebook of Sherlock Holmes – the one filed under 'improbably explosive' (subfolder: homoeroticism) – and pulls together a sequel that, by the law of the blockbuster, is destined to be a lazy rehash of the first film. However, not so in this case; Ritchie has upped the ante on every level, building on the same style and plot devices as Holmes' last outing but raising the stakes in the process and delivering an adventure that's just as fun as the first time round.

  • Why Martin Scorsese's Hugo will flop

    Movie Feature | Ali | 22nd November 2011

  • Contagion: Steven Soderbergh remade Outbreak minus the monkey

    Movie Trailer | Ali | 14th July 2011

Hipster's choice Steven Soderbergh made a movie you probably haven't heard of called Contagion, but cast Matt Damon and Kate Winslet in it. Ugh, sell-out. (*straightens lens-free glasses*)

  • Sherlock Holmes

    Movie Review | Kirsty | 4th January 2010

Sherlock Holmes is one of Britain's most enduring literary figures, thanks in no small part to previous adaptations of Arthur Conan Doyle's books on the big and small screens. Whilst it's not known whether anyone has actually read a Holmes book in the last few decades, everyone has a clear mental picture of the detective in question and can throw out a few misquotes when the situation calls for it.
