Hipster's choice Steven Soderbergh made a movie you probably haven't heard of called Contagion, but cast Matt Damon and Kate Winslet in it. Ugh, sell-out. (*straightens lens-free glasses*)

The January to March release window is a graveyard for movies: you can guarantee that any high-profile movie scheduled for a Q1 release will either be a film that has low expectations (usually because it's crap) or a film that'll sail right over the heads of the summer blockbuster crowd. I'm happy to report that The Adjustment Bureau falls firmly in the latter camp: it's an artful sci-fi thriller that doesn't feel the need to lob fistfights or car chases at you in order to entertain. Unfortunately, it's out on the same day as Liam Neeson's stolen-identity action romp
Unknown, so you can expect it to get thoroughly trounced anyway. Schedulers, you've done it again!

From time to time a film comes along that marries the perfect story, perfect script, perfect director and perfect cast. Chinatown had it, The Godfather had it and True Grit's got it. Sit back and wallow in its sweet perfection.

Hereafter opens with a tsunami. Despite some occasionally shaky CG effects (correction: occasionally shaky
Oscar-nominated CG effects), it's a powerful, harrowing scene, particularly in light of the recent worldwide floods. It's also quite apt, as the following two hours of Hereafter can only be described as a tsunami of boredom - you'll be helpless as waves of indifference crash down on you and you're overcome by a strong torrent of sludgy dialogue. Before long, the afterlife starts to sound pretty damn appealing.

A fourth Bourne movie is definitely going ahead, but won't actually feature Jason Bourne. Yep, it's going to be the Halloween III of the franchise.

It's a sci-fi film based on short story by Philip K Dick, but you wouldn't know it from the title. It might as well be called Blank Shrug Yawn.

Before the dust has even settled on the Iraq war, several filmmakers have cast their lens in the direction of the conflict and raised pertinent questions about what is essentially an ongoing crisis. That is unprecedented, considering war movies of the past are typically made a considerable period after the conflict has been done and dusted. No film this year will be as politically charged as Paul Greengrass' stirring and unflinching war movie.

Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon have effectively cut their ties to the Bourne franchise, but they are still talking up a reboot. Hey Hollywood: reboot this. (*points to computer*). It needs a system update,
motherfucker.
