  • Spinning a yarn: the twisted sickness of Phantom Thread

    Movie Feature | Luke Whiston | 4th February 2020

"Wuaghhhurg" - that's the exact noise I made towards the end of Paul Thomas Anderson's 2017 period romance about a genius dressmaker and his ingenues, which to all external appearances was the simple tale of a sexy rich gentleman misogynist and the women falling prey to his sexy rich charms, set against the backdrop of a Brexiteer's image of 1950s London. I didn't know how wrong I'd be. And it doesn't mean anything that I'd mixed up Phantom Thread with In Fabric and was expecting some spooky ghost action. Although there are hauntings in this, just not of the chain-rattling variety.

  • Top 10 films of our lifetime #6: There Will Be Blood

    Movie Feature | Ali Gray | 19th September 2014

It was quite tough to pick just the one Paul Thomas Anderson film for the list. I loved The Master but it feels like it needs a rewatch post Philip Seymour Hoffman's passing to truly appreciate it. There Will Be Blood, on the other hand, feels like it's been preserved in time already: a dyed-in-the-wool classic and no mistaking. Don't just stand there reading this pre-tease: jump right in to read more of me waxing lyrical - Ali.

  • The Master

    Movie Review | Ali | 1st November 2012

For all the talk of The Master being a Scientology exposé – the kind which could feasibly cause the very foundations of Hollywood to crumble – Paul Thomas Anderson's sixth feature is instead an intimate, intense character study that's more interested in the dynamic between follower and leader than sharing the secrets of the snake oil salesman. It won't have you calling for the head of Tom Cruise, but it will make you re-evaluate Joaquin Phoenix post I'm Still Here and it will have you longing for PTA movies at a rate of more than one every five years. Woozy, boozy, sleazy and dreamy, it's impossible not to be seduced by The Master – and, indeed, the master.

  • New PTA trailer sparks Master debate

    Movie Trailer | Ali | 21st May 2012

Nice try Bond, but today's most exciting trailer is the teaser for Paul Thomas Anderson's Scientology parable The Master, complete with creepy Joaquin Phoenix smile and clanky Jonny Greenwood score.

  • Poster for the best film of 2013

    Movie News | Ali | 18th May 2011

It's blurry. It's unofficial. It's untitled. It's not even in production yet. Seriously though, just trust me on this one.

  • There Will Be Blood

    Movie Review | Ali | 20th February 2008

"I want no one else to succeed. I hate most people. I've built up my hatreds over the years, little by little." Meet Daniel Plainview. It's fair to say he's not exactly a people person. He is, in fact, a bit of a bastard, and that's putting it mildly. Plainview is the latest terrifying creation of actor extraordinaire ...
