Hollywood is patently ridiculous. It just is. There is no element of the filmmaking business that isn't stupid as hell. You have studios spending hundreds of millions of dollars on adaptations of 1930s radio serials. You have actors who talk about artistic integrity while promoting their animated guinea pig movie. You have audiences who actually hand over their hard-earned cash to see Adam Sandler in Grown Ups 2, a film which – if it isn't some elaborate sting engineered in order to separate morons from their money – is just a sick fucking joke.

In bringing to prominence the idea of the American Dream in his 1931 book Epic of America, James Truslow Adams wrote that it was "a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable". In doing so he likely didn't foresee that one day a film starring Marky Mark and The Rock would distort the notion with glorious excess, suggesting that it is a hollow hope when misinterpreted by the ignorant. Or that I would steal his quote from Wikipedia and pass it off as serious historical research.

True fact: If everyone found out that life on earth was going to be snuffed out by a meteorite in three weeks' time, your average person is more likely to embark on a hedonistic riot of sex, drugs and anarchy than embark on a quirky odd-couple road trip in a last-ditch attempt to provide some meaning to their life. But hey, this is the end of the world as indie cinema knows it.

There I was, minding my own business, reading a book about zombies, when BAM - the first picture of Warm Bodies: The Movie. Pale skin, a warm embrace, a supernatural romance, hair... Did I just enjoy something in the same genre as Twilight? UH OH.
