Eight assumptions I'm making about 24: Live Another Day

I never quite managed to get along with 24. After three episodes of the first season I was just about done. Then I tried them again about a week ago. Same result: booooooring. It doesn't half move slow for something with a built-in device for urgency. So with 24: Live Another Day coming up on Sky 1 I have no choice but to base this article on a series of ill-informed assumptions. Or, you know, just write nothing at all.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug

First things first: there are no songs, no washing up scenes and no fucking eagles in The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, which immediately makes it a better film than its predecessor. The eyeball-molesting increased frame rate of An Unexpected Journey has also been, if not dropped, then less loudly trumpeted for this film, which is another blessed relief. You'd almost be fooled into thinking that Peter Jackson has been listening to his critics, were it not for the fact that Desolation is still an obscenely long, slightly dull, inferior version of a Lord Of The Rings film.

So as it is, I've gone for quantity, having reconciled myself to a lack of quality: no fewer than SIX DVDs are featured here, each as cursorily as the last.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows

Once again, Guy Ritchie delves into Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's lesser-known casebook of Sherlock Holmes – the one filed under 'improbably explosive' (subfolder: homoeroticism) – and pulls together a sequel that, by the law of the blockbuster, is destined to be a lazy rehash of the first film. However, not so in this case; Ritchie has upped the ante on every level, building on the same style and plot devices as Holmes' last outing but raising the stakes in the process and delivering an adventure that's just as fun as the first time round.

Alice In Wonderland 3D

Stop me if you've heard this one before. A literary adaptation by Tim Burton, set in a twisted, multi-coloured alternate universe, starring Johnny Depp as a borderline weirdo and Helena Bonham Carter as a loud-mouthed, pasty-faced kook. Sound familiar?
