Awesome 70-minute critique of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

18th December 2009

Generally listening to a film nerd tell you in detail why they disliked a film is about as pleasurable as trying to extract a wisdom tooth. But this critique of The Phantom Menace is different. Why? Because it's correct.

It's fashionable to beat on Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and I won't ever pretend that I didn't like it when it came out, but having now seen it back on DVD and on ITV3 every weekend, it's obvious to all that it's a grade-A turd.

That said, I don't think I've ever come across a critique of it that's as on-the-money and as funny as this guy's take. Known only as Mike from Milwaukee, he's cut together a 70-minute video pinpointing exactly where The Phantom Menace falls down - and there's surprisingly little of your run-of-the-mill Jar Jar bashing. If you get a spare hour or so, it's well worth the watch.

George Lucas would do well to watch this, but of course, nothing with anti-Jedi sentiment would make it through Skywalker Ranch security. George Lucas is so detached from reality, he's like one of those Japanese POWs that are still hiding in the forest, fighting World War II long after it ended. Only this POW has a billion dollars and a fat neck.
