Time was, you could get a bit of a reaction by saying Adam Sandler was a good actor. You'd be the toast of the cognoscenti, lauded for your brave and rare insight, or at the very least one of those professional contrarians who make film Twitter such a rich and challenging environment. These days the evidence is there and the idea's not controversial: everyone knows he can do it when he can be bothered changing out of his tracksuit. Maybe it's time to think of him a bit differently.

The sight of a middle-aged man in a trilby is hard to bear. Particularly when it isn't accompanied by what you judge to be any other changes in his regular attire: just a single hat, borne as a standard on the scalp, saying, Will this do? Am I cool again? The cycle of youth makes us all obsolete sooner or later, and it's hard to accept. And while there's a dignity to aspire to in Don Draper, defiantly immaculate in sports jacket and tie at a party full of hippies, can you blame a man for wanting to get back what he had when he can't pinpoint when he lost it?

It has become a Hollywood truism that, since the advent of CGI, it is now possible to put literally anything up on the big screen as long as there’s a large enough suitcase of money involved. There are no limits anymore. Movies can now show us scenes that are beyond anything we can possibly imagine, such as alien spaceships or giant dinosaurs. Well, ok, I suppose we can all imagine both of those things. What about... a time before the universe existed? Or climaxing pastry? Anyway, movies can deliver it all. And now this film, about a hopeless fantasist swapping his daydreams for a real-life adventure, gets to play with those rules. The potential for visual spectacle is limitless. There are literally dozens of funny voices Ben Stiller can use.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted

They left New York. They went to Madagascar. Then they ended up somewhere else in Africa. Now they're in Europe, trying to get back home to New York. It's the Circle of Life. No, hang on, that's ... anyway, here's a pleasant surprise: this animated threequel from DreamWorks is a whole heap of fun. What's more, it represents a film's most effective use of the song 'I Like To Move It' by Reel 2 Reel (feat. The Mad Stuntman) since it was first popularised in the work of Truffaut.

2004. Anyone recall what happened that year? There was a football tournament I think? I do remember failing my first driving test because I went to see Dodgeball that same night to cheer myself up. And in a tedious way to link to this film, that was the last time Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn shared a screen together. Since then, neither has really been keeping the funnies consistently flowing. I passed my driving test by the way.

For someone who has starred in some of the best comedies of the past decade, Ben Stiller is hardly a guarantee of good quality. For every couple of Zoolanders, there's a Meet The Fockers. And now he's brought Eddie Murphy out of retirement from credibility to try to remember how to be grown-up funny. Sans fatsuit and everything. With so-so action-comedy director Brett Ratner calling the shots, this is destined for the bargain bin, isn't it? Get ready to be shocked and amazed...

Little Fockers

Don't be fooled, the Focker sprogs appear merely as an excuse to make the title sound rude and to fuel a few recycled gags. Little Fockers is otherwise business as usual: good ol' family feudin' whilst Bob De Niro piles another layer of dirt onto the coffin that is his dying career. And for giggles, he drags Harvey Keitel down with him. Martin Scorsese must be very disappointed.
