In times of crisis, look to Hanks. America's on its arse and what it needs now more than ever is a man whose Twitter account is dedicated to finding gloves on the streets of New York, not making baseless claims of voter fraud. Inferno got it wrong, but Sully understands better what sort of hero Hanks can be: the kind who manages to land a malfunctioning aeroplane but afterwards just wants everyone to stop going on about it.

11 ways Clint Eastwood's American Sniper embellished the truth

Clint Eastwood's military biopic American Sniper tore through cinemas in the red states last week to break January box-office records, making military supporters fire their guns in the air in celebration. However, questions remain over the movie's accuracy, following accusations that the movie's subject, Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, was a fantasist (he claimed he shot and killed two carjackers and that police covered it up, and that he picked off looters during Hurricane Katrina; neither incidents were ever confirmed). Eastwood's movie makes no mention of these events, so what other inconvenient truths does the movie ignore?

American Sniper

Oh, great. This should help smooth things out. While I wouldn't support the action, I'm surprised to have heard no calls to postpone the release of American Sniper. Here's a portrait, entirely unshaded by grey, of a US Navy SEAL who claims more confirmed kills than any other sniper in US military history, all of them in Iraq. There are interesting questions about the morality of this, given how many more lives he likely saved, about the effect it had on him, and about the implications of American occupation in the Middle East. Clint Eastwood isn't terribly interested in asking them, though. While this is an effective and very watchable war movie, it's as uncomplicated as it gets.

Clint Eastwood accepts challenge to use shittiest title font ever

I would have thought Eastwood would have wanted a title treatment that said 'glitz and glamour' or 'rhythm and swing', not 'five dollar blowie from a tramp in an alley'. I can't identify the font, but I bet that's a forced italic - and I'm pretty sure that's a stock Photoshop pattern overlay. The little hole in the top loop of the 'B' is literally driving me fucking cuckoo. THIS IS MY CURSE.

I'm not a huge sports film fan and, to be honest, I'm less interested in baseball than practically any other sport. It's pretty much at the bottom of my list, just below dressage and kabaddi. And this movie isn't even about playing baseball - it's about a grumpy old man watching it and complaining about life. It's basically Moanyball. (*high-fives self*)

At this point, even I'm prepared to admit that TV's influence is getting a little out of control.

One of the cardinal sins of film journalism is that you must never call a film 'boring' – professionalism dictates that there must be a more accurate way of singling out the movie's flaws; a more apt way of summing up why it disappoints. A dull script, perhaps, or flat performances. But no. There is no better way to summarise the ways in which Clint Eastwood's Hoover biopic fails: J. Edgar is just fucking boring. It just is. It looks boring, it sounds boring, it feels boring, it IS boring.
