  • Marvel's Cine-CHAT-ic Universe: Iron Man 3 (2013)

Movie Feature | Matt Looker, Ali Gray, Becky Suter, Luke Whiston, Ed Williamson | 14th January 2019

It’s the first film of Phase 2, the last film of the Iron Man series, the seventh film of the MCU and now the latest reason for us to email each other again rather than just use WhatsApp or Snapchat or text like any other cool kids with smartphones and stuff. Oh shit, no one texts any more, do they? Gah, why am I so old?

  • Alien: Covenant

    Movie Review | Ali Gray | 11th May 2017

By rights, the Alien franchise should be dead by now, all curled up on its back like a big dead spider, flambéed by the flamethrower of critical ire. How many other movie series would be allowed so many misses and still get invited back to the plate for another swing? Throughout its various iterations since the 90s - sequels, prequels, versus match-ups - the Alien franchise has succeeded only in corroding its own legacy. Even 2012's promising Prometheus, directed by franchise progenitor Ridley Scott, fell short of expectations thanks to its entire cast suffering total frontal lobotomies in the third act. Well, the rot stops here. In Alien: Covenant, Ridley Scott has directed the best Alien movie of the past 30 years, and although that isn't exactly a glowing compliment, know this: not only does Covenant deliver a payload of short, sharp scares and atmosphere in spades, it course-corrects the franchise as a whole, retroactively making Prometheus feel like a better movie too.

  • Iron Man 3

    Movie Review | Matt | 24th April 2013

Just how do you follow The Avengers? Surely going back to single-hero stories after that huge-scale monster blockbuster just seems like a disappointing step backwards? God, Marvel have really dug themselves a billion-dollar hole, haven't they? I bet they’ve been puzzling over what to do next while using a solid-gold, diamond-encrusted head scratcher. Well, it's lucky for them that, as with phase one of Marvel's Cinematic Universe, this next chapter is being led by the shiniest instrument in their toolbox: Robert Downey Jr (who outshines even the most polished of Iron Man suits). And, with Shane Black in charge, we get more Downey Jr than ever before in what is not only the best Tony Stark film to date, but also Marvel's most mature output yet.

  • Don't Be Afraid of The Dark

    Movie Review | Rob | 3rd October 2011

Let's get this out the way from the off, shall we? I find most horror movies all a bit 'samey' - more often than not, it'll be a dull, repetitive case of count the clichés. Needless to say, it's not my favourite genre. But would this remake of the 1973 made-for-TV horror change my stance on the scary movie? In short; no, even if Guillermo del Toro is 'presenting'. [What a horrible image - Ed]
