  • All of these new Lincoln stills look like someone has just farted

    Movie News | Luke | 25th September 2012

This new batch of images for Steven Spielberg's upcoming biopic Lincoln gives us the chance to be incredibly puerile. We jump at that chance. With gusto.

  • Looper

    Movie Review | Ali | 10th September 2012

I saw Looper on Friday last week, and rather than frantically post a knee-jerk reaction review as soon as possible, I thought I'd attempt something a bit different. I loved it and immediately wanted to froth about how it was the best sci-fi of the year and a genre classic in the making, but these sort of labels can only be correctly applied with time. Thus, I'm posting this feature with a blank space, in which my future self – 30 years into the future, as in the film – can write his considered opinion, discussing the longevity of Looper and whether it stood the test of time. Hopefully by 2042 time travel will have been invented and the Ali Gray in 30 years will be able to send back his review, giving us a unique insight into how Rian Johnson's film held up. Fingers crossed it works!

  • Hesher

    Movie Review | Ali | 5th March 2012

Earlier this year on one of my weekly trips to Amazon to buy DVDs I definitely don't need, I stumbled across a film that I've been waiting to hit UK cinemas for years now. Spencer Sussman's black comedy Hesher was the talk of the festival circuit in 2010, but now finds itself ungamely shunted onto DVD shelves without so much as an apologetic press release. No film starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Oscar-winner Natalie Portman (star of "The Black Swan" according to the DVD cover) and Rainn Wilson deserves such a fate: Hesher deserves more than one of Matt's DVD round-ups ("I haven't seen it, but...") so here's my review in full.

  • Win a 10-pack comedy DVD/Blu-ray bundle, thanks to 50/50

    Movie Competition | Ali | 24th November 2011

Another competition? What are the odds! (Significantly better than 50/50).

  • 50/50

    Movie Review | Ali | 23rd November 2011

You can always judge an 'illness' movie on how hard it makes you cry. Depending on the genre, it may also make you laugh or think or empathise, but when it comes down to it, the tears tell the story – it's the one emotion that informs all others, the one that can't lie. So what saltiness level are we talking for 50/50, Jonathan Levine's buddy comedy based on writer Will Reiser's own cancer treatment? When it comes to the crunch, it's quite likely there'll be "something in your eye", with possible cheek wiping needed, and a fair chance of a little dry-sobbing at the end. It's unlikely to have you bawling, but 50/50 is smartly written and well acted enough to have you fully invested once it's time to find out if those titular odds come good.

  • Premium Rush trailer offers standard thrill (see what I did there?)

    Movie Trailer | Ali | 17th September 2011

It's an action movie about... cycle couriers? When was this made, 1983? I sure hope no one releases a movie about rollerbladers any time soon, otherwise this is going to look really dated.

  • Riddle me this: is Joseph Gordon-Levitt Batman's new foe?

    Movie News | Ali | 21st July 2010

They should just go ahead and call the new movie Batman Speculation.

  • New Inception trailer isn't afraid to dream a little bigger, darling

    Movie Trailer | Luke | 8th May 2010

Chris Nolan must have got an iPad. Either that, or he lives underwater.
