  • Steve Jobs

    Movie Review | Ali Gray | 5th November 2015

Was Steve Jobs a genius? Was he a revolutionary? Did he change the world? Or was he just an egotistical asshole? Danny Boyle's Jobs iOpic, powered by word processor Aaron Sorkin, doesn't so much pick a side as it does tick all the boxes. Michael Fassbender's Apple guru is at once exhilaratingly wise and exhaustingly obstinate; a complex man with fearsome drive but fundamental flaws; a man who doesn't deserve a glowing biopic or a Hollywood hatchet job. Boyle's portrait of the Cupertino legend is a fizzing, lively affair that certainly has you convinced of one man's genius, although we're guessing that man wasn't supposed to be Aaron Sorkin.

  • The Divergent Saga: Insurgent

    Movie Review | Becky Suter | 18th March 2015

God forbid I should ever have kids, because according to the latest glut of teen movies (Hunger Games, Maze Runner et al) I'd be condemning them to a future where they have to compete in some kind of experimental death fight just to survive. And you can bet any money my offspring won't be 'The One' who can save humanity; knowing my luck they'd probably join the dark side just because they get the better outfits.

  • Divergent

    Movie Review | Becky Suter | 24th March 2014

Imagine a world where sexy teens battle against a dystopian landscape, and it's up to one plucky heroine to rise up and overthrow a corrupt governing body. You've just imagined The Hung- Oh no, wait, this is Divergent. And that is probably Divergent's initial problem, trying to overcome the inevitable comparisons with that other book/film that also has a lead girl in it. That and the fact that Theo James' magnificent cheekbones just REFUSE to QUIT. Seriously, you could cut glass with them.

  • Carnage

    Movie Review | Matt | 2nd February 2012

If you type 'Carnage' into IMDB, you'll find it is the alternative title to The Nail Gun Massacre, A Bay Of Blood and even Prime Cut, an early Gene Hackman film about a cattle rancher who "grinds his enemies into sausage". It's the kind of title you'd expect to see propped up on the bargain shelf at Asda with a cover showing Stone Cold Steve Austin walking away from an exploding jeep. And yet here I am reviewing Roman Polanski's new low-key character-based comedy. It's almost a shame.

  • DVD weekly: Harry Pearce, Mildred Pierce and Merlin's peers

    TV Feature | Matt Looker | 28th November 2011

Here are all the new releases on DVD and Blu-ray, just begging you to buy them. Go on, this shit makes for great Christmas presents and looks a lot better than giving your mum the latest Steven Seagal film to open.

  • Contagion: Steven Soderbergh remade Outbreak minus the monkey

    Movie Trailer | Ali | 14th July 2011

Hipster's choice Steven Soderbergh made a movie you probably haven't heard of called Contagion, but cast Matt Damon and Kate Winslet in it. Ugh, sell-out. (*straightens lens-free glasses*)

  • Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

    Movie Review | Ali | 3rd September 2004

They say the average human only uses 5% of his brain. Charlie Kaufman is certainly not the average human, and if scientific boffins were to poke their bits and bobs into his frontal lobe, I think you'd find the results to be most startling. The creative genius behind Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, Kaufman is the hottest ...
