  • Jupiter Ascending

    Movie Review | Matt Looker | 6th February 2015

There’s no excuse for actively willing a film to fail, but sometimes it just seems written in the stars – when all the planets align for a colossal mess of galactic proportions – and, in that instance, all you can do is hope that the film is so ludicrous in its concept and execution that it becomes that rare creation: a film so unintentionally hilarious, it provides the funniest movie experience of the year. With Channing Tatum’s Spock ears and gravity roller skates, Eddie Redmayne playing a raspy villainous fopp and Sean Bean playing a half-man-half-bee (oh yes), it seemed that Jupiter Ascending couldn’t fail to fail.

  • Oz The Great And Powerful

    Movie Review | Matt | 1st March 2013

Big CGI adaptations of classic children's literature will now always bring to mind the Technicolor yawn that was Burton's Alice In Wonderland. As with that film, this prequel’s bright, colourful landscape and cartoonish, pixelated characters always looked to me like they would produce the same uninspiring results. But thankfully, while Oz may still look like it has been twinned with the garish Wonderland here, somewhere under the rainbow, you might find some real, genuine magic.

A new one-sheet has been released for Sam Raimi's Oz-venture and it looks... well, like it's been drawn by a daydreaming fantasist. What ever happened to needless sparks and helicopters?

  • Ted

    Movie Review | Ali | 2nd August 2012

I have a love/hate relationship with Family Guy, and Seth McFarlane by association. Nothing about it is particularly clever or witty or considered – in fact, the laziness and sloppiness of the writing is often shockingly cavalier; stale pop culture punchlines and routines straight from the 'We can't be bothered to finish this joke, so that's the joke' school of comedy. Yet in spite of myself, almost by accident, I still find myself laughing at it from time to time – usually when I'm shattered at the end of the day and lapsing into sleep. It's hardly a glowing endorsement, but the occasional LOL does elevate Family Guy above 'no way and no how' programming like Two And A Half Men.

  • Black Swan

    Movie Review | Ali | 24th January 2011

How to describe Black Swan? Ballet-based lesbionic headfuck just about does it - there certainly aren't too many pigeon holes you can bash this particular peg into. Though it touches on a number of genres and encapsulates several themes, Black Swan is best viewed as a horror movie - a slow creep into insanity that's touching and terrifying in equal measure.

  • Today I learned: Mila Kunis was in Hulk Hogan's Santa With Muscles

Mila Kunis: she's hot, she's talented and she has a filthy laugh. But she also has a dirty little secret. It's called Santa With Muscles and it stars Hulk Hogan.
