  • Despicable Me 3

    Movie Review | Ali Gray | 3rd July 2017

Let's just re-establish The Boss Baby Clause from earlier this year: Despicable Me 3 is a kids movie, and it was watched in the company of a kid, and it was enjoyed by said kid, thus to me, it was a successful movie. Writing criticism of movies patently not made for you is a fool's errand, but we're all professionals here, so let's try and engage the critical faculties and fire up a review for old time's sake. Despicable Me 3 is... fine? I guess? Let's say yes.

  • It Was Fifty Years Ago Today! The Beatles: Sgt Pepper & Beyond

    Movie Review | Ed Williamson | 29th May 2017

Where Ron Howard's Eight Days a Week ends, as the teenage screams die down after the last chord struck at Candlestick Park, Alan G Parker's new documentary begins. Timed to coincide with Sgt Pepper's fiftieth anniversary and hoping to catch the wave of tributes and looks-back that will go along with it, it takes us from the end of Beatlemania into the start of the studio years and through the recording of their most significant album. And it doesn't come near to doing it justice.

  • The Birth Of A Nation

    Movie Review | Matt Looker | 12th December 2016

Can you separate the art from the artist? Is it fair that a film with high hopes of awards potential is now being overlooked because of behind-the-scenes controversy? And should we let a 1999 rape charge brought against filmmaker and star Nate Parker affect how we view his depiction of rape in this film? One thing's for sure, film reviewers everywhere are grateful for being handed an easy opening paragraph before never mentioning the ethical dilemma again for the rest of the review because it's all a bit (*sharp intake of breath*)

  • Ain't Them Bodies Saints

    Movie Review | Ed Williamson | 5th September 2013

Well, ain't them? No, I don't understand the title any more than you do. But over the few weeks since I saw this, the advertising for Alpha Papa has influenced me so much that every time I think of it, I imagine Alan Partridge saying the title as an expression of weary frustration. "Guhhhhh, ain't them bodies saints?" But Partridgian asides aside, here's an independent film that paints an engaging picture of love torn asunder on a Southern-fried canvas. Cashback.

  • Parker

    Movie Review | Ali | 8th March 2013

Halfway through Parker, Jason Statham looks lovingly at a dog. It's quite possibly the best thing he's ever done; not because he then proceeds to engage it in a highly ludicrous fight scene as you might expect, but because it shows he has a sense of humour. Self-awareness might be the last piece of the package that makes Jason Statham a bona fide film star, because in Parker, he displays presence, charm and wit, as well as the pre-requisite EXTREME DEADLINESS. George Clooney might be able to kill a tuxedo, but I doubt he'd be able to kill a man with some Blu-tac and a couple of egg boxes.

  • Mr Big says the media killed off the Sex And The City franchise

    Movie News | Ali | 25th September 2010

Good job, the media! Chris Noth has dropped a bombshell on every girl and gay in the world: there will be no more Sex And The City movies. Prepare for the most hilariously misguided quote of the year.

  • Sex And The City 2

    Movie Review | Anna | 1st June 2010

If you've seen the freaky poster for this movie, that should tell you all you need to know without having to purchase a ticket. This film is plastic, with no heart and very little brain. Fans of the TV series beware; this ill-advised sequel is a major letdown and it makes the first movie look like The Godfather in comparison.

  • New Sex And The City 2 trailer

    Movie Trailer | Ali | 10th April 2010

Ohmigod girls, did you see the new Sex And The City trailer? I know! [giggles] I can really relate to it! I am so like Samantha! Every time life gets me down I jet off to Abu Dhabi for a week all expenses paid.

  • A Mighty Wind

    Movie Review | Ali | 12th September 2004

"It's Spinal Tap with Folk music!" cried the reviews of Christopher Guest's latest improvised mockumentary, but to label it as Tap with mandolins is doing it an injustice. Sure, you'll find Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer combining to create lukewarm water once more, but in reality, A Mighty Wind is more like ...
