    Movie Review | Rob Young | 20th October 2013

As he took to the stage at the London Film Festival, Richard Ayoade stumbled through the introduction of his new film. He turns to his executive producer, who just so happens to be Michael Caine, and says, "You're probably used to working with someone much more professional." But the modest Ayoade has nothing to worry about. The Double is an extremely professional piece of work, assuring his place as one of the country's finest directors/quiz show panellists.

2004. Anyone recall what happened that year? There was a football tournament I think? I do remember failing my first driving test because I went to see Dodgeball that same night to cheer myself up. And in a tedious way to link to this film, that was the last time Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn shared a screen together. Since then, neither has really been keeping the funnies consistently flowing. I passed my driving test by the way.

Though I don't agree with the relentless tub-thumping that occurs in the UK press every time a half-decent British film is released - as if it's mandatory that you HAVE to get behind it because it's BRITISH and THE KING'S SPEECH - it's nonetheless a very welcome surprise when a British filmmaker releases a genuine gem.
